We should not acquire "rentals" by paying a high price because we are not a SC contender at this time.
We do need to build for future seasons so we must have a high degree of confidence that we can sign any expensive-to-acquire "rental". That probably means gaining the right to talk to the "rental" player prior to consummating the trade and getting player agreement to sign after the trade is made..
Agreed.

Reason I'd be fine acquiring Donato for a 3rd (assuming that'll get it done), his next deal won't be too expensive. He's fine in the top 6 and could be extended in the $2-3 million range. He'd be an upgrade over Amadio as well

Puljujarvi is a very easy pick up for me.

Defensive forward who can skate and who can support some talent. I think would be valuable for the run

You mean you’re hoping Vancouver is looking for a Norris package for pettersson lol
No one took him on waivers while he was making 800k. If Ottawa wanted him they could've claimed him. I'd still be open to giving him a chance considering how bad our forward depth is

After 4 Nations it's only 2 weeks until trade deadline and some big decisions are about to be made. I entertain the idea of getting taste of Halliday in the NHL in that meantime.
At Coming in Hot podcast in December coach Bell was talking he is learning physical aspects of game this season and he's been on fire lately so it would be nice to see where he's at and maybe what to expect. If everyone's healthy:

Tkachuk - Norris - Batherson
Halliday - Stutzle - Giroux
Perron - Pinto - Amadio
Greig - Ostapchuk - Gregor

Lots of players get sent through waivers and seemingly no one wants. Were are tight against the cap with not many assets to trade. Need to take a chance somewhere

Ever since we drafted Yakemchuk and Jensen solidified himself as Chabot's partner, any need for EK disappeared. EK below $3 million on the third pairing is fine, but anything over that to have him play behind Zub and Jensen is wasted cap space. We would have to move Norris as well and kill centre depth that we aren't getting back in any situation where we get EK back.

I'll welcome EK back on a league min contract in a few years but right now it doesn't make sense

I don't think for on ice reasons that an EK trade makes a lot of sense, but if I can play devil's advocate:

Yakemchuk's timeline is pretty close to EK's timeline to get phased out of the lineup. They very clearly do not want to rush Yakemchuk, otherwise he would have been on the roster out of training camp when we had a glaring need for depth on D, and he had a lights out preseason. There is no guarantee they envision Yakemchuk spending the entire year on the team next year. So it potentially would be a situation where EK and Yak only overlap for however many games Yak gets before being sent back to the CHL, and then for the last season of EK's contract (assuming he plays out the entire contract, which with his injury history could go either way).

They very clearly want out of the Norris contract if there is truth to the perpetual trade rumours from the last 2 years. If the reports that the Penguins will retain on Karlsson is true, they can potentially fit a 3C and Karlsson in at close to the cap hit of Norris. So that means they would have Stutzle/Pinto/Greig/Amadaio and another C as options to fill the top 3 center spots. I don't think center depth would be a problem.

You know what is a problem with this team? Scoring. Despite his drop in overall play, that is something Karlsson excels at, creating offense. He has also shown that at least for a short period of time, he can excel in very structured defensive systems. Ironically, the peak of his career came under a suffocating systems coach.

The most intriguing reason for them to bring back Erik Karlsson is that at the end of the day this is an entertainment product that relies on fan dollars. How many extra season ticket packages or sponsorship deals are they attracting by bringing back one of the biggest local superstars of all time? How much positive goodwill does it bring to the current ownership group (as long as they don't put him in half a Nordiques jersey....) to be able to effectively write one of the biggest wrongs of the Melnyk era?

(Yes, the trade worked out - and no sane person would undo it, but the series of events that lead up to the trade, and the trade even being a possibility is what is perceived as being negative.)

Donato is clearly not an upgrade on Amadio

If Tkachuk gets traded to Florida don't be surprised if Zito trades Verhaeghe before his new contract and protection kicks in, something like Verhaeghe, Luostarinen, and 2026 1st for Tkachuk.

It is interesting that 9 out of the 16 teams in a playoff position at this time have already traded their #1 picks.
Yeah but those teams will still have their 2026 pick. If this year's draft is so weak, then would be nice if Sens gave up their 1st round this year and keep next year's assuming they finish this season in the playoffs.

He has a NMC per Capwages.

I don't know if his original 3 year context had a NMC in the UFA year, but it's fairly standard for players to have their trade protection on the remaining year revised when they sign an extension, it just doesn't get announced often.

Trade before NMC usually becomes a factor when a player signs an extension with both RFA and UFA years. Subban was an example of this. Players cannot get NMCs on RFA years, so it created a scenario where there was a period of time he was under contract without one.

There's worse returns out there, but I have serious doubts that Zito would do Verhaeghe dirty like that after he helped them win a cup.

Ok we are at Tkachuk trades again, I guess Sens lose 2 games in a row

Probably has more to do with Brady's complete lack of GAS this season, and especially in 2025.

He's not playing like he wants to be here. Maybe Green finally forcing him to play defense is the dealbreaker for him.

There are only two types of moods:

Either you just CAN'T criticize BT7 anytime for anything.

Or he is not been playing good enough recently so he is obviously going to be traded we just need to figure out for who.

Well, there is the third mood where we hate Brady no matter what he does and he’s nothing more than a glorified 3rd liner…. Don’t forget those guys!!

Donato has scored 19 goals along with 18 assists so far this year. To say he's clearly not an upgrade on Amadio is just plain insane.

Different type of player.

Amadio is a smart two-way winger that brings size to the table. Ideal fit for a 3rd/4th line.

I could be wrong as I haven't watched him a lot over the last several seasons, but I've always thought of Donato as a Gaudette-type sniper that doesn't bring a lot beyond scoring.

And what worries me a bit about Donato is opportunity. Like I stressed with the Perron signing in the off-season, offensive opportunity, particularly on the top PP unit, is a massive factor in how much a player is able to produce.

Donato is top 5 on the Hawks for PP time with 1.43 minutes per game. Not sure what role he's been playing for them, but if he's primarily been on their top unit, there's no question his numbers are being boosted because of that, and he wouldn't be able to play the same role with us.

I really hope Staios has been paying attention to the team's performance against legitimate contenders in the Lighting and Panthers.

This team may be able to make the playoffs this year, but they are nowhere near contenders yet.

It would be a complete waste to trade any quality assets for short-term help at the deadline given that reality.
