We'd have to move out Forsberg to make it work, and probably trade JBD as well.

For what it's worth, that projected space includes both Merrilainen and Forsberg, so you can add about 820k to it.

All that said, your point stands, we don't have a ton of flexibility, we can waive guys (forsberg I guess) and recoup up to 1.125 mil, or we can trade guys. Alternatively, we can pay for the other team to retain (which was never happening on Carrier).

I guess we could pull a TBL/VGK with Perron, give him the season off on LTIR and bring him back for the playoffs...
Yes, I guess that was my main point that it would take some moves/subtractions. Whether they’d be willing to go with Merrilainen as the backup for a longer period, I have no clue. There’s always a lot of detail to consider and my post was more generalized in nature versus looking at the numerous possibilities.

It was a dumb signing, but we should have over 20M in cap space this off-season with Giroux, Kleven and Greig as the only decent players needing new contracts.

Will have plenty of cap space to add a good forward and some depth on D.
There was a thread about next years cap & roster next year. The thread contained numerous scenarios & spreadsheets. The amount of cap space isn’t as abundant as some might think if you start filling in roster details.

Kleven hasn't shown he's remotely close to earning $2.5mill. Stud defensive Dman that are very productive 5on5 like Slavin and Weegar earn significantly less than their peers, and those are UFA contracts.
Assuming:

Giroux @ 6M
Kleven @ 2.5M
Greig @ 2M
Gaudette @ 2M
JBD @ 950k
Reinhart @ 775k

Tkachuk - Norris - Batherson
Giroux - Stuetzle - Gaudette
Perron - Pinto - ????????
Greig - Ostapchuk - Amadio
Reinhardt

Sanderson - Zub
Chabot - Jensen
Kleven - ???????
JBD

Ullmark
Sogaard

Total cap hit is 85.88M. If cap jumps to 92.5M as expected, that leaves over 6M to fill out 2 spots down the lineup.
Giroux is over 35, we can get him a 35+ contract. Pay him $3mill in cap hit and $3mill in bonuses.

If you provide a spreadsheet (or comparable tool) with all the roster spots & salaries identified & include the buyouts/retained salaries, then there is something tangible and complete to analyze.

I'm being fairly pessimistic in my assumptions about what we can re-sign those players to show even if those players are more than adequately compensated we'll have a fair amount of space leftover.

Heres a screenshot of something i put together quickly.
I have
Greig and Kleven at 2 million
Gregor at 1 million
Giroux at 6

This screenshot is with a 92.5 million cap. If we wanted to run a league minimum roster then we have 4 million to sign a winger.

Don’t forget almost 2 million for Korpisalo and Colin White.

I am going to guess Forsberg to Carolina for a late pick and a warm body waiver exempt goalie like Tokarski.

Then we go out and acquire a pending UFA RHD using that cap space. Mods have banned me from saying who I think it might be. I'm apparently on thin ice as far as they can see. See, I don't want to cause any trouble so I won't mention his name.
Yeah I lobbied hard for that ban

Apologies, as my numbers were way off somehow.

We'll actually have 76.255M committed next season with Giroux, Kleven, Greig, Gaudette and JBD to sign, and if those guys end up collectively costing 14-15M or so, we'll be left with little cap space to improve the roster.

So the Perron signing will indeed impact our ability to improve the roster, unfortunately.

22-player roster

Total $91.25 m (or in other words, not plenty of leftover cap space)

Blue shaded cells - estimated cap hit for RFAs

Orange shaded cells - current roster player with their salary, or a replacement (TBD) player’s cap hit

Yellow shaded cells - players promoted from Belleville on ELC contracts + a TBD backup goalie (salary allotted was lower than average backup goalie)

Other notes:
Giroux or replacement @ $4.5 m
Left wing (or L/R winger) @ $4 m

I like the predictions but I would t resign Giroux, easy decision in the sense he doesn’t have the legs anymore, he’s not a top 6 and the bottom six needs speed and jam, G just can’t do it either.

How Staois decided on Giroux I think goes a long way, that money will be so valuable to sign a top 6 F or a top 4 RD and if they keep him around for policies or sentimental reason I think it’ll be a mistake

I can't see them walking away from Giroux. They already said how difficult it is to find veterans.

I think that the ship has sailed on him getting 6.5M. He will probably be in the 3.5M-4.5M wheelhouse. David Perron is probably the internal comparison. He signed for 4M coming off of a similar production/role as Giroux has now.

They could also do a performance bonus based contract with a higher AAV, but a lower base salary. 1 year, 2.5M AAV, 1.5M bonus at 50 points, 1.5M bonus at 20 goals, 1M bonus if he averaged 18+ minutes a game and plays in 50+ games, etc.

i would absolutely love this but heres the thing

Giroux has 20 points in 31 games, about a 53 point pace, last year he had 64 points

perron's contract is the floor in my opinion, i expect giroux's contract to be in the 4.5-6 million range, that being said a performance contract is a good way around it

This looks realistic to me. I would replace your $2M TBD for the backup goalie and replace it Merilainen, and reallocate the difference toward an upgrade over Giroux. I would keep JBD where you slotted Yak, who I would start in the AHL to begin the season.

Looked up the impact of signing bonuses for players greater or equal to 35.

Yes, performance bonuses for NHL players who are 35 or older and sign a one-year contract count against the salary cap:

  • Explanation
Performance bonuses are not guaranteed, but they are added to the final cap hit for the season in which they are earned. If the total cap hit, including bonuses, exceeds the salary cap, the excess is a bonus carryover that counts against the cap in the following season

Awful for Ottawa. Stamkos has negative value at this point. That trade better get us Peterka, or no way.

I'm gonna bet around 5 for Giroux if his production stays around the same. I hope he takes a haircut and prioritizes the team trying to win, but not holding my breath. Also think we should be going 1 year at a time at this point, but it'll likely be 2.
