Alex Carrier to MTL

IMO that a solid pickup for them. It is possible to get RD

I was thinking about who we could realistically pick up that could potentially be available at this stage…

I don’t know that many guys are available. There aren’t many guys we could fit under the cap that are out there.

San Jose has Rutta and Ceci that could move but we would need to clear cap space.

Buffalo has Jokiharju that could move.

I could see the Flames trade a guy but probably not until the offseason … they’re hunting for playoffs. I could see Miromanov available right now for 3rd pair.

Otherwise Borgen was moved, Desharnais was moved, and now Carrier.

There’s a massive shortage of RD in the NHL.

I think Staios looked at what was out there and with the team winning (and the lack of cap space/assets to trade) he probably decided to hold off and hope that we can keep playing well until Zub comes back. JBD and Kleven have been playing relatively well. Hamonic is holding the fort for now. Options are thin.

If anything they should look to pick up a guy like Coghlan or Hutton off waivers as insurance policy until Zub returns and keep him for the roadtrip.
We currently have $520k of cap space, but only $325 k of PROJECTED Cap Space. Carrier has a $3.75 m cap hit.

It seems simple enough to say get player X, but unfortunately our cap situation is a real world restriction when it comes to an in-season upgrade (RD or whatever). Trade proposals also need some kind of plan or subtraction of a player unfortunately.

We can technically use LTIR, but I'm sure management expects both Zub and Perron to come back sooner than later, and don't underestimate the ability to accrue cap by the deadline.

Ott doesn't need a RD, they have Zub & when he returns that will solidify the RD position. In fact, they need both Zub & Perron to get healthy & return to form, if that happens this team becomes much better defensively & offensively quite quickly. I expect that at some point in the new yr both should return, we just need this team to continue to play well at both ends & stay consistent game after game.

Clearing cap is part of the job of the GM. If you have no cap space and you feel like we are bloated in some areas and weak in others then you have to move money around or use LTIR. Part of the job.

Sens can't make any changes without clearing cap. That much is obvious.

I'm not saying we should have got Carrier but he is a good piece if you feel like we need a better RD. The narrative that its impossible to get a RD is false

I don’t disagree with the concepts. I’m just saying to have a trade idea these days, it needs to contain a plan to stay cap compliant. That would likely entail identifying the player or players to be subtracted. Saying use LTIR is the easy part, but it's incomplete and only temporary.

I’m not sure I’m seeing the “impossible to get a RD” idea either, but hard to know what every single poster has posted. “Difficult” might be the better word.

Perron's contract makes it pretty difficult to make any major upgrades next year without moving a core player or letting Giroux walk.

I reeaallly hope he has at least some scoring touch when he comes back because that could be an annoying contract to have if not.

The only positive thing I've seen from Perron's very small sample to date is a willingness to forecheck in the corners and around the net and finish his check regularly.

It's nice to see a veteran with that kind of determination but it's not worth $4M.

Fingers crossed.

Picking up a good complimentry top 4 guy for 3 years would be great, Clearing 3.75 for a guy you'd be happy to play 19/20 minutes a night would be a very nice problem to have

He and Sanderson would be a fantastic pair
You clear the money and then acquire. Dorion loved putting himself in situations where he had zero leverage.

Picking at the bones re Sabres

Sens need another top 6 winger

What would it take to get one of

1. Zach Benson .. smaller but responsible, uber talented .. high iq
2. Jack Quinn.. Quinn came back from Achilles surgery. May be more risk ??

Peterka assumed to be higher cost
I’d be willing to move Greig for Quinn.

When posters are talking about trades which necessitates identifying the player to be subtracted, you’d also have to wonder how easy it would be to move Perron in-season.

I’d be willing to move Greig for Quinn.

In a vacuum I'd consider it. Buying low on Quinn could really pay off potentially.

My worry in the moment is the subtraction of sandpaper and grit (which we don't have a lot of) and the addition of more finesse.

Ridley Grieg should be the kind of player that can up the physical ante on a shift while potentially playing in the middle six.

There are teams out there that put all of their physicality on the 4th line (because they aren't good enough to play further up in the lineup) and I don't find that to be particularly effective.

Quinn isn’t soft. I saw Quinn thrive with Rossi and I have visions of him working perfectly with Stutzle.

I think Greig should be kept as well because he has a great mix of grit and skill, and we saw how effective that will be in the playoffs with the Panthers last season.

We'd have to move out Forsberg to make it work, and probably trade JBD as well.

For what it's worth, that projected space includes both Merrilainen and Forsberg, so you can add about 820k to it.

All that said, your point stands, we don't have a ton of flexibility, we can waive guys (forsberg I guess) and recoup up to 1.125 mil, or we can trade guys. Alternatively, we can pay for the other team to retain (which was never happening on Carrier).

I guess we could pull a TBL/VGK with Perron, give him the season off on LTIR and bring him back for the playoffs...
