Borgen is having a rough year but had 2 strong seasons in a row where he played like a top 4 RHD. Not to mention it's essentially negating Kakko's cap hit. We'd have been forced to go into LTIR space, meaning we couldn't accrue cap space by the deadline, and the fact that Perron and Zub are probably returning soon anyways, which leads to more issues going forward.

Gregor is playing well, why wouldn't you re-sign him at that price? This team lacks speed which he has + he's good on the PK. Cousins has been playing very well with Pinto/Amadio. He was brought in specifically for his post-season experience and leadership. I want to wait to see how this season plays out before kicking him to the curb.

Personally, I think they could walk away from G or release Gaudette if his ask is too high if you want to open up a roster spot for Ostapchuk. I don't think Reinhart is any better than the players we currently have so why make room for him if the player he's replacing is basically at the same salary?
I think they need to make room for Ostapchuk next yr, he is already playing a regular role with the team & looks like he will be a pretty good bottom six player. IMO we need another goal scorer on the bottom six, I thought it might be Perron, but family issues seem to have prevented him from contributing so far. I like the bottom six guys we have & they have helped immensely to bring the goals against down & play a much better style of defence but we could also use a little more offence from them. Nice to see Pinto start heating up, we also need Greig to start heating up as well. Not sure when Halliday will be ready maybe next yr, since he is getting closer & already has NHL size & brings some added scoring & passing skill. They need to make some room at some point.

Would like to see them add a winger to the Ostapchuk line who can splat people like he can and have the classic 4th line that plays hard but also hurts to play against. A Chris Neil would be perfect

Tom Wilson or Lawson Crouse would be perfect, but will be difficult to get either unfortunately, but need someone big & tough who can also play & contribute.

It's amazing how you stop looking like a genius organization when star player after star player stops forcing their way to your team...
Or randomly winning a first overall pick after finishing the regular season in a playoff spot.

I'd rather have a 4th line that can outscore other team's third lines.

A Vermette-Kelly-Eaves line if you will.

Some of you seem obsessed with Kakko. He was healthy scratched one game and now you're convinced he's been shopped? Has anyone confirmed this.. like Lebrun?

I don't see why the Rangers would want to dump a 23 year forward (former 2nd overall). He hasn't lit the world on fire but he's a smart, defensively sound player. Unless he's told the Rangers he wants a ridiculous amount on his next deal, why would they get rid of him?
lol

Annoying to see Montreal make a good trade. It probably had to do with cap space. They didn't have to send anything back.
Sens could technically take him on the roster rn and move someone once Zub is ready

Just need a saavy GM to make those kinds of moves

Carrier is solid. Trotz sucks as a GM.
Yeah, if they were going to trade him, couldn't have they obtained Kakko at least?

I could be off with my eval (I haven't seen much of these players), but Carrier >= Borgen, and Kakko > Barron (I realize Kakko and Barron don't play the same position, I'm just looking at it in terms of value, not fit necessarily).

Alex Carrier to MTL

IMO that a solid pickup for them. It is possible to get RD

I was thinking about who we could realistically pick up that could potentially be available at this stage…

I don’t know that many guys are available. There aren’t many guys we could fit under the cap that are out there.

San Jose has Rutta and Ceci that could move but we would need to clear cap space.

Buffalo has Jokiharju that could move.

I could see the Flames trade a guy but probably not until the offseason … they’re hunting for playoffs. I could see Miromanov available right now for 3rd pair.

Otherwise Borgen was moved, Desharnais was moved, and now Carrier.

There’s a massive shortage of RD in the NHL.

I think Staios looked at what was out there and with the team winning (and the lack of cap space/assets to trade) he probably decided to hold off and hope that we can keep playing well until Zub comes back. JBD and Kleven have been playing relatively well. Hamonic is holding the fort for now. Options are thin.

If anything they should look to pick up a guy like Coghlan or Hutton off waivers as insurance policy until Zub returns and keep him for the roadtrip.
