Villalta is pretty much of a run-of-the-mill third stringer. He can put up decent numbers in the AHL and maybe sub-in very briefly at the NHL level. Maybe. There's also Jaxson Stauber who is the same age as Villalta with a little more experience and a little better numbers. I'd think their values are pretty interchangeable. I'd take Merilainen over both personally.

With Ullmark locked up for the next five years, there is no real path for Sogaard. He could push for a job in Utah either this season or next.

Norris for Crouse, maybe some other pieces to make the money work for Utah would be interesting.

Over There
how about we trade guys who are actually not worth their contract ie Norris and Perron to clear cap

crazy that people want Brady gone
So your solution is to trade underperforming players? For what, exactly? Different underperforming player?

This f***ing board.

You want something of value, you give up something of value - that's it.

Brady has value.
Pinto has value.
Greig has (diminishing) value.
Batherson has value.
Zub has (some, not recent) value.
Giroux has value.

Norris is about as near untradeable as anyone, ever. Chabot, might be able to find a team desperate enough at the deadline to take on his contract.

Reality is, Dorian f***ed this team for years with his piss-poor drafting, ridiculous trades, and the dipshittery that he called "cap management" with all these early long-term $8m/yr deals.

Looking more and more like another rebuild.

FYOUS indeed.

He's led the team in scoring 4 of the last five yrs & has led this team in numerous other categories. He's the best player on the team.

Trade Stutzle, he is terrible defensively & keeps giving the puck away.
Sorry this year stutzle is like 10x the defensive player tkatchuk is. And he can actually help us possess the puck and create chances.

I would be fine with Crouse for Norris.

I like Norris but his contract and shoulder worry me when the team is already locked into so much cap.
I'd like to keep Norris as well, but with all the injuries we've had this year to our depth, I'd be down to move Norris while he's healthy and let another team deal with the uncertainty around him being able to be a healthy 35g guy..

What does giving Norris away do to improve the team though?

They don't need a message sent and a downgrade at center, they need better personnel.

They just had to overpay a 37 year old David Perron to get him to come to Ottawa, who TF do you think they are signing if they collapse again this year?

what does trading Brady for a downgrade help?

Atleast with Norris we can use that cap space for a player that is worth it

If the season ends poorly again, change is needed and he's one of the few with potentially positive trade value, hence why his name gets brought up.

Getting a better UFA than Norris is not realistic and they don't have the assets for a big trade unless it's a significant player with trade value or a combination of them.

Nobody has said that Tkachuk has to be the one moved in that scenario, but it's going to have to be guys that carry positive value, and it doesn't seem like that's Norris with the shoulder injury history. And with Grieg and Pinto having slow seasons, Norris has still been the 2nd best center, so the downgrade argument applies to him too, you're basically just subtracting from the roster unless you know you can land someone. They're in a tough spot. Don't want to move Tkachuk, I get it, but I don't think your scenario is going to move the needle and likely just makes the team worse, unless someone completely unexpected wants to dance with a team mired in misery. It's not like the core just needs to be shaken up and jolted to life if this goes south, they need different ingredients, high end ones.

Guys like Zub and Batherson with only 2 years left may end up the likely candidates.
