We really don't have the cap space to add anyone significant.

After plugging Kleven into the 3LD spot and Ostapchuk/Gaudette in the 4C hole, we'll have about 1.8-1.9M.

That's with a 21/23 roster. Two league minimum (0.775M) contracts filling out the rest of the roster with 3 spares would leave us with about 0.3-0.4M, so basically nothing.

Maybe we could add a decent 3rd pairing D like Schmidt/Schultz for a little over a million if they aren't getting much interest, but we're probably looking at guys like Ruhwedel/Bortuzzo that will accept a lower salary.

Guys like Tarasenko are off the table unless we're clearing more cap.

Why are people suggesting X or Z forward to sign?

We literally paid a pick premium to get rid of Joseph. Why would we sign a guy who would likely cost more and not be as good?

If anything sign another RD to play with Klevin
There are very few UFA’s left who are going to sign for more than 2.5 mil.

We can sign a D man and a forward each for around 1.5 mil.

Critical we add a notable improvement over JBD on that 3rd pairing. Critical.

Our offense is still full of question marks therefore we will need our D and Ullmark to sustain us. I said a few months ago that we will need 2 RD adds for us to enter next season with any semblance of a sniff at that final wild card spot. Right now Jensen is a solid grab. Will be like a Demelo counterpart to Chabot or Sanderson which will bode well and he'll play to his limits. We need an upgrade on that 3rd pair. Or else we will spend the early part of the season highlighting the hole and say what could have been. We have the cap. We need the smarts.

Go get Shattenkirk and Cousins.

My play would be run with a 21 man roster (Hamonic being the 7th D)
Try and replace JBD with Schmidt.

Tkachup-Stu-Giroux
Norris-Pinto-Batherson
Perron-Greig-Amadio
Gregor-Ostapchuk-Crookshank

Sanderson-Zub
Chabot-Jensen
Kleven-Schmidt @2-2.5
Hamonic

Ullmark
Forsberg

I think that's a damn good looking group and comes with a cap hit of 87.335 all in

edit: Crap Schmitdt off the board

Such solid work yet the post above yours has Schmidt off the board.

Next man up.

I assumed Ryan, but he's not a FA and not the guy Edmonton will be looking to move.

Is this sarcasm? He was part of the Furious Five.
Then obviously he wouldn't be the guy. I should have checked.

I still think we should be looking for vets to fill these holes rather than assuming Kleven/Ostapchuk/Crookshank are ready.

I honestly thought you might have been making a joke lol. All good. But ya, Ryan McLeod is not likely to be made available.

I do too. Would be nice to have options and have these guys force their way in to the lineup. Kleven may be the exception, but then JBD probably needs an upgrade.

Kleven I think its safe to assume he is ready. He was so consistent all year in Belleville. Will he be perfect? No. But thats why people are stressing the importance of a veteran d partner for him.

I think we need one more forward then let Ostapchuk, Crookshank, McEwan, etc.. to battle it out for the last forward spot in camp.

What happened to him? I remember he was highly thought of.

Was it that long ago? He was in Vancouver and went to Vegas and then everybody hated him after? Or was it the other way around....
Had a bad season in Vancouver after getting hyped but rebounded a bit in Winnipeg. Eventually slowed down but still a very effective 3rd pairing d-man.
