We wouldn't have been able to get Rantanen with Norris being a piece going the other way. Norris is a better 2 way guy than Necas, but Necas doesn't have an overpaid lengthy cap hit or the injury history.

Pissed that we didn't try to get Hall for a 4th or a 3rd. No idea wtf Chicago was doing. They could've gotten a 3rd or a 4th if they retained on Hall, on top of getting a 3rd for retaining Rantanen. Hall would've been a decent buy low stop gap winger to try and ignite the offense.

Heck I'd have tried to offload Perron to Chicago in case they still wanted a vet presence for Bedard.

If you sign him, it's a one year deal and you basically tell him one transgression and it's off the Belleville, so it's in his best interest to just keep his head down and play hockey.

I think with that type of understanding he could, short term, stay out of trouble.

The bigger question for me is whether his style of play can fit in here, because he's the exact opposite of what we're preaching
He's had that with Philly, 2nd stint with Carolina and a KHL team. No point in even starting that type of drama, happy that another team is taking that losing gamble.

Your last point is 100% on point. Tony D can't play in a way that fits in our current team.

Norris smashed his face on the ice, it’s not a recurring thing.

Taylor Hall had 9 goals and 15 assists in 46 games. He was useless.
Taylor hall was worth line a 5 6 or 7th round flyer. Basically it. He went to a good situation on a juggernaut where he can be a complete passenger princess and maybe score some tap ins

Hall had no value at 6 million, at 1.375M he has value. I think that retaining on Rantanen was a proxy for double-retaining on Hall, because retaining on Rantanen was more efficient. It didn't require bringing in a 4th team to an already convoluted trade.

A top 70 pick was an overpayment, it's basically a late 2nd. But it isn't that crazy. If Hall was traded at the deadline, I probably would have expected a late 3rd or a future 3rd to Chicago, and a 4th-6th round pick to a third party team.

EXACTLY
The country club ruling the team has to end at some point
Chabot and Tkatchuk ask Dorion for help
They got some good players to help and it didn't amount to squat
Andlauer must be so delighted to pay a guy 8mm$ for 27 points (Norris) lol
There are 46 players with .95 PPG + in the league
None is a Sens
Chabot is the 17th highest salary for a D and is 59th in PPG for D
Pinto is 275th salary 315th in PPG
I mean its all fun and all to underperform but at some point maybe it would be fun for them to finally make the PO
We need a Captain Bligh to get this team moving forward.

Yikes is very very kind!

So we have Gagne on a tryout contract.

Is signing old washed up vets a Staios thing?

I think I’d go as high as 2.5 x 3 for Mathieu Olivier this summer.

I think he gets more than that.

At 27 and with the season he’s having, solid PK guy, has a letter on his jersey, and the best fighter in the league I think if he tests the market he’s getting 3.5 x 5-6 years.

The league is craving for that type of player. Unicorn right now. Think prime Chris Neil in today’s NHL that’s what he is.

Lots of players fall on the ice and aren't out for weeks afterwards. Norris is made of glass, and at his price and term, isn't worth the risk anymore.

And 24 points for a depth forward is fine when there's no one else in the lineup to replace him and play with Bedard. His experience is obviously coveted since the Canes went and got him. If he was "useless" they wouldn't have bothered.

Hall was dogshit in Chicago but given out lack of assets, paying a 4th or 3rd (at half retained) is the best we can probably do.

Even if there's better forwards available, I can't imagine Staios getting anyone with offensive upside that can fit into our middle 6

We definitely need more team toughness. Remember this:

The article above said the “optimal salary” for a 2C would be $6.5 m, so I think the $2.5 is too high. Next year it's probably going to be more like $1 m too high especially if the cap gets a bigger boost that some have speculated.

What I find interesting is that Norris contract has been deemed an albatross, but trades proposals for players like Rantanen, Marner, Miller, Petersen had Norris as the main piece in the trade. I’m all for improving the roster, just not sure what it's going to take to do that. The cost in terms of assets for a better player is going to be high, and if the Norris contract is an albatross, then it's going to take much more than JN to swing the deal.
Norris contract is an albatros for sure...but we had a historic albatross in Korpisalo and someone took him, so maybe we could land on our feet with a Norris move.

I guess it depends on the definition. If you pull cap hit into the equation, then Norris is about $1.45 m overpaid this year (posted the rationale and link in other posts, see post #19,070)). And, the overpay will be less next year (around $1 m) as the cap goes up. But, an albatross contract would be in my mind a contract with the player that is way overpaid (by 2 or 3 times more than he’s worth) and produces almost nothing. I guess some people use a different definition.

Like I said in previous posts, an upgrade would obviously be good, and I’m all for that, but I don’t think that is as easy as some think. There’s a lot more nuance in my post & thought process, but it wouldn't surprise me if that is getting lost.

If point production is the specific focus for the criticism, then Senator skaters on a whole have not been prolific and deserve scrutiny. They are 7th worst league wide in GF/G. Stutzle is our leading scorer, but he is just 33rd overall league wide.

My bad, I haven’t watched a lot of Columbus, I figured he was just a great fighter who could survive on a 4th line. Digging deeper, I’d be fine with 4M x 5. He will definitely be in demand. Come on and play with Team USA north.

I wonder what it would cost to acquire Nick Schmaltz RW out of Utah? He would be an interesting Giroux replacement.

Like others have said, I would also like to see them target Mathieu Olivier RW, but they would need to find someone to take McEwan or bury him in Belleville again.

I expect Ott after this season to move on from Forsberg G, Hamonic RD, Cousins LW, Gregor LW, Gaudette RW & Highmore LW.

I doubt they move on from Gaudette a player that can score 20 goals and he and Green have a good relationship. He provides depth at scoring.
