Ah, ok.

I think it's an upgrade (that fourth line) over what we rolled with for much of last year when we had Gambrell in with guys like Lucinni, or Brown,

McEwen is meh, I don't see a huge difference between what he'll provide and Watson, he seems to skate better, so there's that. Kelly had a bad year, maybe we can upgrade there, idk, but I do believe he can be better than he was, Kastilic I actually like, when he's healthy. Back issues apparently took a toll on his game last year. If healthy I think he can be good.

Ideally, someone like Smejkal shows he's an NHL player and pushes Kelly out.

4th line is going to get what, 8 mins a game, I don't think it's as big a deal as some think it is, but ideally I'd like the guys on our 4th to be able to chip in on the PK, as that takes the load off the top 9. not sure we have the pieces for that.
Those three guys certainly all better than what we got from
Kelly last year.

Your last paragraph is completely right. There’s a big difference to me between a line we are comfortable to play 8 minutes a night and Kelly-kastelic-macewan

Kelly needs to be replaced. Macewan we will see.

Probably a deal goes down today as a Friday news dump especially if the return is so-so

That's him, I never heard of him, but I never grew up around here. Liam calls him a legend. I have met a few guys in hockey that were similar tough guys & have all kinds of war stories, some hilarious & some sad & tragic.
Its who Ogie Oglethorpe was on Slapshot.. Goldthorpe isn't from Ottawa as far as I know. He was on the Ottawa Civics team in the WHA

Bring it on at this point. I'd prefer a resolution to this so we can carry on with other business, than PD roleplaying as a min/maxer trying to squeeze the most out of the deal.

The sunk cost fallacy on this trade is palpable.

If Ottawa do indeed have Tarasenko locked in for a top 6 role I wonder if they try to get Mazur out of the deal instead of Breggren. Mazur fits more with the mold of DJ and Pierre and gives them an extra year where he can play in the AHL.

Well, the Kings were comfortable with MacEwan for 8 a night, so that's a good sign as they're a decent playoff team.

I do find the hate Kelly gets interesting, not because I think he was by any means great last year, but I remember listening to coming in hot a fair bit last year, and it seemed every time they had Ryan and York go over video or talk about the 4th line, they were of the opinion that Kelly was the only guy that belonged on the 4th line, along with maybe Kastelic. It's interesting seeing how opinions are so far from what those two were saying.

Or pressbox, only dressed once in the playoffs and was in and out down the stretch

I am one of a very few that don't mind Kelly in his role on the 4th line. Harder player to appreciate granted.

Was going to ask,"Who's Derek Lee?", but I guess you've answered that.

Guy with NHL experience who can (kind of) skate a regular shift, for the bare minimum, on a team with some of the worst depth in the league. I'm not sure why or how anyone is up in arms about this.

Yes he probably got a year longer than anyone else was offering him, but as we've seen with PD's moves this off-season he's seemingly willing to make the term someone else's problem if he can get a salary that fits his structure. It makes sense from his perspective, and when it comes to a guy on the minimum who you can bury in the AHL it makes sense for the team too.

I think he'll end up getting more games than not since I think he's a bit better than the Kelly/Highmore/Imama's of the world but he's not good enough that I'm particularly worried DJ will elevate him in the lineup. He is what he is, an ok 12/13F who can keep the seat warm.

Well, it's three years longer than Dorion will be here....so who cares right?

But isn't that what we should expect given that we are looking to win in playoff games? Carkner wasn't dressed until EK needed him to straighten out Boyle & Neil wasn't dressed until the team couldn't deal with Tanner Glass of all players. He'll play limited minutes in the regular season occassionally when it is warrented & he won't when it's not & likely won't play in the playoffs if we have better options unless he is needed.

Lucic signed in Boston & Reaves in Toronto, our division got much tougher & Ottawa needs a response that dosen't cost much & won't play until it's needed. I don't know Imama so I'm not sure he is an NHL player, getting MacEwen seems to indicate they prefer an experienced NHL enforcer. Should be interesting how this plays out.
