Rumor: Matheson: EDM Oilers and Trent Frederic discussing 8 year extension

Didn’t they trade the 2nd rounder they got for Broberg for him?

Feels like a desperation move by Edmonton to keep him around, so they can avoid saying they got nothing for Broberg.

Of all the Oilers who played the entire playoffs (22 games), he‘s the one who produced the least (1g, 3a = 4 points).
He played a fairly safe game and got around pretty well despite the reported high ankle sprain. I don't think we got to see the best version of him in this playoff run.

That being said, you have to question why they'd target him in a year where they wanted to win.

As an Oilers fan I'm generally fine with giving the guy the benefit of the doubt re: the injury and giving him another shot.

But one sure does wonder why he's getting a long term deal at a questionable sounding number.

People in this thread not realizing Frederic was dealing with a high ankle sprain which hampered his effectiveness is peak HF.
People in this thread not realizing Frederic has only ever produced even half decent when he played with Bostons best players.

Had a whopping 5pts in 22 games in the postseason before Edmonton and was frequently scratched by Boston

That’s peak HF

Dont even remember him scoring a goal. Maybe an EN ..
Frederic couldve been replaced by Max Jones and we would not have missed out on much.

BOS won the trade hands down there and now Bowman will open up his wallets to double down on his loss.

its because we paid a 2nd+3rd for him and dont want it to look like it was all for nothing

I don't think he is taking less than what he signed for two years ago. He likely will be paid between 3-4 Million per year cap hit.

It'll be $3 million AAV at minimum - he's already at $2.3, the cap is rising, the Oilers invested assets into him and he's the type of guy GM's and coaches tend to value above fans.

And I think it's $3 million if he gets a long-term deal like 6 years to spread the cap out a bit. If it's less years, the cap hit will climb closer to $3.5 million or $4 million IMO.

AFP has him projected at 2 x $3.5 million but I think at minimum he's going to get 3 years.

I thought this was a great pick up at the time of the trade

but my god was i disappointed with his performance

needed to be a WAYYYYYYYYY bigger rat. He has it in him, he just wasnt even close to being the pest that he needs to be.

Trade McDavid and Bouchard to Boston for Pasta and McAvoy and start building a real team.

Oilers need to focus on priorities. Frederic is not a priority at all. In the scheme of things, he's a waste of cap.

But then again, that is the Oilers way. Focus on non-priorities, mismanage your cap and then lose the cup because of a lack of goaltending and cheap productive depth (Holloway / Broberg).

Frederic was fine. Underlying numbers were solid. Don't get the rush to lock him up for the rest of his career though.
He is less than 2 weeks away from becoming a UFA. There is a bit of rush in thay sense.
His playoffs performance should lower his ask..

Coming off a 2yr/2.3? contract, What would you say is reasonable going forward?

I would say a 3x3 contract should be the absolute most for him
