If Geno wants to come back for another year as a winger next year at a reasonable cap hit, and his play is fine / the Pens don't have a better option, I'm not sure what the problem is. Hell, Matt Cullen had a renaissance at Geno's age playing a very solid 14 minutes a night as the 4C/3C hybrid. I think he was skating better at that age than Geno is right now, but taking the TOI down could really help. Geno can play defense if properly motivated.

I keep flip-flopping between two ideas of “they need to add a LD that can play minutes in the short term” and “this team is going to suck so why do we care if they have a LD that can play minutes?”

I’m just generally uncomfortable spending a lot of assets this year, not only on NHL players but just in general. I think you can spend 2 2nds to either trade up, add a LD or trade for Howard’s rights before I don’t want to spend any more futures. I think you’d have to acquire another 2nd for me to be willing to trade any more picks.

That said, trading down with the Rangers 1st this year is an easy way to do that. If you trade #12 for #17 and #41, I’d be pretty fine with trading another pick (probably pick #59 this year) to help do one of those 3 things.
