So they knew he tore his MCL but kept teasing fans that he was 1-2 weeks away from the moment it happened?

Cool, cool cool cool
A non-surgical healing of a partial MCL tear has a wide range of healing time:

  • A grade 1 (minor) MCL tear can take from a few days to a week and a half to heal enough for a return to normal activities, including sports.
  • A grade 2 tear can take from two to four weeks to heal.
  • A grade 3 tear usually takes four to eight weeks to heal, unless the ACL is also damaged, in which case recovery may take longer.

Sounds like he could have possibly made an appearance..eventually.

We don't know specifics but if it was a grade 2 tear he should have been ready around May 28th. If grade 3, then could be longer.

Thus, if a grade 2 or less, there would be angst from team mates/team Mgt. re: Freddie's unwillingness to get back on the ice (and would tie into past Leaf organization issues with Freddie).

From Cleveland Clinic website:

The time it takes to fully recover from an MCL tear depends on how severe the tear is. A grade 1 (mild) MCL tear usually heals within one to three weeks. A grade 2 (moderate) MCL tear generally takes four to six weeks to heal with treatment. A grade 3 (severe) MCL tear can take six weeks or more to heal with treatment

I understand there could be frustration from the team, but goalie is a completely different scenario from most position players.

You put your goalie out there with less than full mobility, you're begging to be blown out at the NHL level and likely risking reinjury or a different injury to compensate.

MCL tears are a lot easier to deal with for a skater than a goalie as well. Less lateral movement; fewer sudden lateral pushes with the knee.

And grade 1 vs grade 2 has to do with how much of the ligament is torn. That should give an indication of how long it will take the ligament to repair itself, but it's still an estimate.

I don't think this was any more than typical NHL tight-lipped gamesmanship about injury status.

I can understand the angst but if the dude isn’t confident he’s not going to be good. The only problem is Raanta is pretty much dead now haha

Remains to be seen what Raanta's injury is. Hoping it's a groin pull or hamstring pull, not a complete tear.

If it's an ACL, Carolina will be hunting for another backup goalie for next year, as I expect Kochetkov will get next season in Chicago.

He looked gassed even before leaving with the injury. Noticed several times him wincing and getting up slowly after moving quickly laterally. I can imagine him looking like that meme with the kid using headphones as an oxygen line trying to get out of the media days

His game 6 reaction time was brutally slow....he was toast then. Agree with assessment from other Caniacs that Koch probably should have got the game 6 assignment.

Yeah, I felt the same way before game 6, and certainly after it. Clearly what we were doing on the road wasn't working. Might as well take one of the low hanging fruit to make a big change to finally win on the road.

Raanta ended up .922 save % - 6th in all PO teams. Backups included. Koch ended up with .869...
Andersen could've been a difference maker - we'll never know that, but Koch for sure was not.

These timelines aren't set in stone and healed does not mean rehabbed.

I'm currently dealing with a grade 2 (50-75%) MCL tear that occurred 8.5 weeks ago while playing beer league. I just this week have been cleared to start doing modified box squats; everything up to this point has been working on regaining ROM as everything in your leg is TIGHT after being immobilized to heal.

I'm assuming based off of all of the timelines given that Freddie's tear was probably much less than 50% but I can't imagine even skating at this point much less doing the lateral movement necessary of an NHL goalie. Obviously I'm far from a pro-athlete myself but I play twice a week and squat/deadlift multiple times a week so not a complete bum (despite what my wife might tell you ) either.

Quoting civ in that article but then not quoting the goalies in that same article its cherry picking. The goalies in that article said you definitely dont play through that type of injury.
Anyone who’s had a knee injury and tried moving laterally would agree with the goalies. I don’t get why people would question him

Like any other injuries. Same would happen in the military. A guy gets hurt and looks to be healthy when observing him. When it comes time to do the lifting, they don’t feel they are healthy enough. People who can only see how they look and not how they feel on the inside. People get frustrated because of it and question it. I’ve done it myself with some of my Soldiers. Still not convinced i was wrong about some of them.
