World Cup: Four Nations Tournament-Team Canada

With the early chemistry we’ve seen between MacKinnon and Necas, I wonder if we see the former paired with McDavid. The concern would’ve been that both McD and MacK need the puck on their sticks, handling zone entries, etc, but as we’ve seen with Necas, having two such threats on the same line can be too much for the opponent to handle.

You could still argue that the team would be better served with the two of them down the middle, but I could see them being unstoppable as a duo.

I would have selected Thomas and Schefiele over Cirelli and Hagel. Cirelli and Hagel have overachieved this year and I'm still waiting for both of them to come back down to earth.

Thompson is unproven and I think his numbers this year are inflated due to Carberys system.

Cirelli and Hagel make sense to me. They fit Cooper’s scheme and have chemistry together.

Hagel was 8th in ESP last season, which is just ridiculous when you think about it and he’s 8th this season (not playing with Kucherov, Guentzel or Point 5v5) with 49/56pts being either ES or SH. Canada’s pretty weak on pure Left-Wingers right now and I don’t think anyone can argue that Hagel is not the best pure LW right now for Canada

Cirelli is Canada’s premier shutdown center right now, so completely understand the selection. With Lowry out, you had Danault and they probably opted for the younger selection. He’s on track to be being a Selke finalist this season. Has that playoff pedigree and can play both special teams. Not a bad pick IMO.

The more ridiculous picks are Sam Bennett, Brad Marchand. Players that are too old, one-dimensional and are being based off one playoff run. If you have Cirelli, Hagel, Jarvis, Reinhart, and Stone on your team already, you don’t really need those 2. That’s where you look to Scheifele, Bedard, or Thomas to round out your team with skill.

Logan Thompson should have made the team. The goalie selections were a joke.

Personally, I think they keep them separate to have easily the best 1-2 punch down the middle in the tournament.

That said, PP1 is gonna be so good. Hopefully having McDavid as a set-up man will get Mackinnon shooting a little more.
 
I'm thinking Bouchard on defense. That shot could work wonders on the 2nd PP unit. To me he is the classic x-factor. With all the talent around him it shouldn't matter if he isn't Scott Stevens in his own zone. Scheifele if Crosby can't officially play.

Doughty better option imo.

Look at resume. Weegar isn’t even close and both in early- mid 30’s.

They need a defenceman not a 4th forward on the ice. Especially with the weak goaltending
 
Please people watch a single game of Brandon Hagel ever. I would take Point off the team before him. Imagine being one of the best 5v5 producers in the league playing mostly with Anthony Cirelli (career high 45 points) and Conor Geekie (not even in the nhl right now).

Mack will play RW for sure. Mack has been giving the puck to Necas a lot and just finding a way to get open in the O Zone. Mack and McD speed would be unmatched

He’s so slept on. He provides so much for this team. Fills in a weak LW position, kills penalties, can play the PP, forechecks, backchecks, great skater, familiar with Point, Cirelli and Cooper.

He’s essentially what people think of Brad Marchand 6 years ago, but is that today.

Doughty’s just coming off a major injury though. I haven’t seen him since he’s been back but it might not be the time to throw him into a tournament like this.
 
Obviously Crosby will play with or without his injury. At this point in his career, it's team Canada before Pittsburgh. The Penguins will be sellers at the trade deadline just like last season. Meaningless regular season games on a crappy team, who cares really. Sid is still playing at an elite level for this tournament and the Olympics next year and nobody will stop him.

I'd still rather bring a defenceman who belongs in the NHL instead. You can't win this kind of a tournament with a defenceman who refuses to even try to learn his position.

He’s worse than Makar and a defensive liability, Doughty was a better choice
 
I don't know why you'd even take the PP1 unit off the ice?
