World Cup: Four Nations Tournament-Team Canada

I'm going to go out and say that if a forward drops out due to injury, I would love to see Celebrini slotted in.

I think he's genuinely good enough for this roster on merit already but also just the ability to get a young gun future-of-the-team in there to learn and build chemistry.

His skill, compete level, 200 foot effort, and hockey IQ is off the charts for a rookie. I think he could be effective up and down the lineup and won't bitch if he's seldom used.
As much as fans complain about management being conservative for these teams, most fans are too. There is no reason Celebrini couldn't be the fourth line LW, for example, on this team.

Yeah contrary the Rhodes Scholars on the WJC managent team I actually think this group picked a good team, and when they picked the team I think Celebrini had only played 8 games or something like that, so it was a reasonable omission. If there was an injury to a bottom 6 player I think I would opt for Gabriel Vilardi or Thomas as the most appropriate replacement, but if there is an injury in the top 6 Celebrini would be my choice, he’s that good already

NHL GMs are a lot smarter than junior hockey GMS and Hockey Canada lifers.

From the way Celebrini was playing at the time I think he was a valid pick. Points were decent but he has good attention to detail already and would be useful in transition. By the date of selection I believe I would have taken Celebrini and Bedard for minor roles. In the big picture I think that they made a mistake not taking more of a look to the future, but I get that the GMs are focused on winning this event first and foremost and they did pick a good team.

Celebrini is the clear choice IMO and I would beg to see him. Unfortunately, Hockey Canada has a grinder first and experience mentality, see WJC rosters and 4 Nations. If you can skate, puck handle, play-make, and are under-23 you will not be on Team Canada. Celebrini fits all those, though he is very defensive-minded as well.

I'm surprised that nobody talks about the Montembeault vs Hill game tonight. Both had very good games, but Monty got the edge with this spectacular save with 10 seconds left.

So who's your starting goalie for Canada?

Sam Bennett has not had a point in his last 10 games.

Are we going to continue with this foolishness of leaving out offense for guys like this? We just went through it.
He can be hidden as the 13th forward, it’s not that big of a deal. If half the roster shouldn’t have been there as was the case at the WJC, I would be more concerned. But basically everyone else is near or above a point a game apart from him, so it’s not the end of the world

Sure - still no need of it. Never was any need of it.

Zamuner was the 13th forward as well in 98.

Streak broken.. Bennett gets a point by taking a mindless hack at a rebound in front of the net. Reinhart does same but scores as Oesterle was not much of a baseball player.

I’ve been saying that they should have taken Bedard over Bennett. Bedard’s finally heating up and everyone saw that coming. Why do you even need Sam Bennett? You have Marchand, Hagel and Konency to play an agitator role and he doesn’t even kill penalties. Not bad along the boards and a good front-of-net presence, but really odd pick. Get he was instrumental to Florida’a run, but he’s most definitely not even a top 30 Canadian forward when it comes to skill.

The Cirelli pick made more sense, as he’s the closest thing to a Selke-level guy and match-up center that Canada has right now

Yep - sticks out like a sore thumb.. I am good with the rest of the selections.

Would Canada’s goaltending be the weakest of the four teams? I think so. And in such a short tournament, especially one where guys might be playing a little softer defensively because of the whole allstar circumstance, high danger chances might be quite high. So goaltending will be a key. Imo Canada will not make the Final. Sweden vs USA for the top spot.
