as much as I criticize the roster, some positives:
GREAT CHEMISTRY:
-MacKinnon, Crosby, and Marner have trained at Vail together
-obviously the Nova Scotia Line
-Reinhart and Bennett. McDavid and Bennett have played minor hockey together as well.
-McDavid and Marner have trained together in the summers
-Point, Hagel and Cirelli
-Point, Konency and Marner have played together at the 2017 WC on the same line.
-Konecny and Sanhiem on the PK
-Makar and Toews
-Theodore and Pietrangelo

GREAT Energy Guys:
-Travis Konency pushes the pace sm
-Seth Jarvis is a GREAT young pick. Can play both center, wing and can play both the PP and PK. He doesn’t need the puck to be effective either. Good versatile option to have as a 13th forward.

They didn't, the majority of attacking ice time is going to go to their top-6, McDavid, Reinhart, Marner, Mackinnon, and Crosby who are among the most skilled players in the league, the rest of the team is just gritty, defensively responsible and possession heavy players who will eat ice time and wear down the other team until the top-6 get out. There's not enough ice time to go around for 12 pure offensive players.

That could be it. I know we need those types of guys, that energy type of line, and the know the big boys will be the ones carrying the load. Just in these sorts of tournaments if the offense doesn't click you don't have a lot of time to have it come around. Hard to imagine the offense not clicking with these guys but who knows. I think it will all work out. They did build this team with a plan in mind. They weren't whistling dixie.

That's the thing though if they don't click you can bury a Marchand-Cirelli-Konency line and they'll still be an effective puck hound line other than a useless offensive one.

What do you do with Laf, Bedard and whoever else? Watch them get eaten by USA's top 6?

I could be wrong on these line combos and what the players actually were at the stage of their careers. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong….

TBH I prefer 2025 over 2010. 2010 was critiqued hard from the moment the team was named and forgotten about their faults the moment they won. That team was solid on paper but had performance, questionable selections, was one goal away from the most devastating loss in Canadian history but mostly forgotten because well they won with the golden goal…

2025 has nothing on the 2014 team but I don’t think most teams do. That was GOAT team with most players in their prime and a GOAT performance. I think 2016 is maybe similar to 2025 not including the goalies with 2016. Wing slightly better still.

The thing I notice with 2025 that the previous teams haven’t had is they they can boost they have the top 2/3 players in the game right now(Mcdavid/Mackinnon/Makar). A post prime Crosby or even entering his twilight Crosby is better then some players prime years. They also have an opportunity to showcase a dream line PP unit.

I do think if Canada is gonna win, they have to play like 2014-2016 playing a complete possibility boring game to mask their goalie insecurities. Judging by the picks and players left off, I do think they have the team to play like that. This whole tourney is really just a practice and experiment for the bigger show in 2026 Olmypics. If they lose, it’s redemption year for the Olmypics and hope to god a Canadian born goalie shows up a years time somehow…If they win then expect a lot of these guys back for 2026.

f*** a goalie anyway, ain't nobody needing that shit.

no its not. strong ass roster, but this is not Canadas best roster.
Its only competition for a worse roster is the 1991 Canada Cup roster, but even Ranford is better than any goaltender here and prime MacInnis, Coffey, and Stevens is a significantly better top three on defence. The 1991 team is the most annoyingly selected team though.

I don't really agree about 2010, people liked that team until the putrid effort against USA in the first game. Of course winning the tournament made it a success in retrospect.

You were pretty close on the line combinations for 2010. In 2014 Bergeron as Crosby's RW the whole time, Kunitz got dropped to thirteenth forward but ended up on Crosby's LW by the end due to other parts falling into place. Benn was LW for Getzlaf, Marleau was LW with Toews (Nash was on the fourth line) and Carter was RW with Toews. Tvares and then Duchene were fourth line C. Seabrook was not on the 2014 team, Vlasic was paired with Doughty, Keith and Weber were a pair, and Bouwmeester and Pietrangelo were a pair. In 2010 Niedermayer and Weber were a pair and Boyle and Pronger were a pair.

I'm not big on this tourney, seems like a here you go fans, now shut up!!

However these tourneys are sorely needed for the experience for the upcoming superstars. McDavid has missed out on playing with Crosby, Bergeron, Doughty, Toews early in his career in these types of tourneys and that passed on experiences can be monumental to players like him.

This tourney I hope to see guys like McDavid, more specifically Marner take advantage of playing with Crosby, Marchand, MacKinnon, guys who have won. I'd have liked to see Bedard, Suzuki, Lafreniere, Power have some sort of role on the team just for the experience to take back.

The league really f***ed up by not making Toews, Doughty, and Bergeron available for high profile tournaments like this in the past to pass on their experience.

Point-McDavid-MacKinnon could be the fastest line in the history of hockey.

Except...
Cirelli played more minutes against the top guys.....
If anyone questions why Cirelli was selected simply look at his top opposition in the 2022 Cup run, going to the finals, Tampa losing Point in First round, and then having a shoulder injury in the finals..

Hahahahaha he was so heavily criticized for this with Michel Bergeron being the main voice, I love the pettiness. It depends who goes down obviously but if there’s an injury in the top 6 I take Celebrini, if there’s an injury in the bottom 6 I take Vilardi

Cirelli most certainly belongs, he is super underrated.

For me if there was a surprise or two it would be the omission of Mark Scheifele however he is not a Defensive dynamo so that is likely why...

Would have selected Weeger over Parayko to be honest, Weeger > Colton, not really sure I understand that logic, ya ya I know he won a cup...but alas, I think Colton will be the 7th D in fact and Travis Sanheim will be number 6.

Cooper is notorious for dressing 7 D so will see how he deploys his roster...

No super big issues with the roster selected. Will be interesting to see how Cooper deploys the forwards.

The D is set already with two pairs which I think was a brilliant idea, reminds me of the Seabrook selection to play with Keith in the Olympics.

I look for Toews and Theodore to have big tournaments, hope that Alex P has enough in the tank...

What a luxury to have Morrisey as the anchor of the 3rd pairing, that is sweet.

The Goalie situation is odd. Canada has never had such a glowing weakness in the Twine.

I bet the competition for the starters role is going to be a heated battle between Hill and Binnington.

Seabrook got dropped almost instantly to 7th defenceman in that tournament and Keith played with Doughty. It's a luxury to have some elite pairings but ideally both players are good enough to actually make it on their own.

I forgot who was being considered as a d-man for 2010. My recollection is that Doughty was a a bit of surprise pick given his age (not necessarily his skill level, which was of course off the charts), but the other names being mentioned and eventually left weren't all that strong. Maybe Mike Green?

All to say, even if the Seabrook-Keith pairing didn't bear fruit, perhaps Seabrook (as a recent Cup champion, part of the 2005 world junior championship team, relatively young) was the best choice for the team anyway.

Has it been confirmed that Binnington is the starter? Or does Hill have a chance?
have not heard.

binnington likely has the inside track IMO, when he is on he is a fabulous Goalie, he stood on his head last year for the blues. Imagine how Binnington might be playing in front of a group of skaters that Canada has assembled. Just have to hope he can keep his cool as his temper does get the better of him at times.

I am a bit suprised that Monty was selected over Logan Thomson and you know, I would have wanted to see Thomson, Hill and Binnigton to see who came out as the starter in a short camp...my bet is it would have been one of the former Knights that won that job...

The Canadian coaching staff likely sees them like this IMO:

Binnigton (not a super long leash) starter
Hill 1b, (if JB shows signs of struggle its Hill's net)
Monty (selected as someone who is learning and will be in the twine in upcoming years)

Seabrook got dropped almost instantly to 7th defenceman in that tournament and Keith played with Doughty. It's a luxury to have some elite pairings but ideally both players are good enough to actually make it on their own.
yes I understand, just drawing comparison to the selection and logic, not what actually happened with Seabrook, Keith, in the tourny

Its only competition for a worse roster is the 1991 Canada Cup roster, but even Ranford is better than any goaltender here and prime MacInnis, Coffey, and Stevens is a significantly better top three on defence. The 1991 team is the most annoyingly selected team though.

There was an abundance of talent left off that 1991 team. Keenan seemed to have a personal vendetta against Yzerman, but there were a bunch of other players that either weren't considered or cut from camp that look really odd in hindsight. I remember there also being a small handful of players that didn't participate because they were free agents; Recchi could have been one iirc.

Courtnall and Corson were likely the two selections that would have been influenced by Pat Burns, the assistant coach. Desjardins too, as he was really young at the time though his elite/near-elite play over the remainder of his career more or less justified the inclusion in hindsight.

I put together a roster a few years ago of Canada's 1991 "B" team and the forwards were deeper, I thought, than the actual team.

Not sure if Canada had such an abundance of talent to draw-upon now. With the names being mentioned for the "B" team, the only names that I think we could really question in hindsight are Bedard and Celebrini. Are we going to be talking in 2058 about Thomas, Scheifele and Bouchard being passed over for the 4 Nations Cup team, like we're talking about Yzerman in 2024, 33 years after the fact? Probably not.

I forgot who was being considered as a d-man for 2010. My recollection is that Doughty was a a bit of surprise pick given his age (not necessarily his skill level, which was of course off the charts), but the other names being mentioned and eventually left weren't all that strong. Seabrook made sense on paper as he was paired with Keith and was a young guy who seemed like he could be there in 2014, but obviously it didn't play out that way. That level of hockey was too high for Seabrook. At the very least Bouwmeester, who was very experienced internationally and always played well internationally, plus who ended up there in 2014, would have been better. I get the logic at the time though.

Canada had far more talent at that time, the early 1990s was likely the peak in talent for Canada, But for 1991 you had things like Lemieux and Bourque refusing, Neely, Gartner, and Nieuwendyk injured, Hull playing for USA, but then the team cut Yzerman, Sakic, Gilmour, Francis, Oates and more. You could make a forward group of Canadian forwards not on Canada 1991 that is better than any forward group any country could create today.

But yeah, Canada 1991 was a choice, Canada 2025 is team largely born of necessity. There are no significant omissions from this team, the pool just isn't all that deep. We can all quibble about a player here or there but almost everyone would pick 80% of the same players.

In the past Canada would stack the team with all the talent available, the other teams weren't as deep, so Canada would roll over them by scoring at will. But the gap between Canada and all other countries is not that big, so focus should be on being able to defend better than in the past. It's almost as if International Hockey has become much more like the NHL game....so the construction of Team Canada is more balance along with the best talent in the world!!

Team Canada have notoriously always been high on LH-RH pairings so I expect Parayko to play ahead of Sanheim.

Toews - Makar
Morrissey - Parayko
Theodore - Pietrangelo
Sanheim
