That’s absolute true, and it also supports the opposite argument, that NYR goalies have masked massive deficiencies for nearly two full decades now and the team is almost further away from genuinely competitive than the results indicate because of elite goalies who neutralize tons of high danger chances that shouldn’t even be occurring. Paying for elite goaltending to bail you out won’t get you across the finish line. Eventually, as you pointed out with the fatigue factor and such, the goalie is going to buckle. If you don’t build a proper team in front of them, it really doesn’t matter.

I agree with all you said except the issue isn't paying for an elite goalie. The issue is allowing an elite goalie to hoodwink you into overpaying mediocre/bad players. That's the real issue that nyr has had for two decades, and the players constantly sit back with an attitude that their goalies will do the work for them. Henke wasn't the issue, the issue was paying staal and girardi among others like they were top line players when they were clearly a tier lower and should have been paid as such.

It's crazy to me that this is bigger than a game 7 to some players.
I get it with the Olympics in some regards, but if that's the case here maybe the Cup isn't the achievement that we make it out to be

It’s kinda like the World Cup in soccer: you’re repping your country and there are no second chances. There is no Game 2 or Game 3. Do or die. There’s a lot more on the line.
