Canada hopefully learned a valuable lesson this tournament... slow boots can make good NHL players ineffective at this level of hockey. Stone, Marchand, and Doughty will need to be upgraded with younger, faster players.
I thought Marchand was fine, and it was unfair to put Doughty here after he missed the entire year, but you're right about Stone. They also need to realize who can't handle this level. Sanheim, Parayko and Cerilli were in way over their heads. Honestly Toews as well.

Yeah, Toews has regressed from his peak and is lifted by playing with Makar. Parayko can disrupt the cycle, but that's it. Cirelli has a role on the PK. He was sent out only to be the 2nd center on defensive draws and then get off, but, yes, I'd look at different options for that role.

That ended up being a great tournament, and it seems like the NHL hopefully gained new fans and renewed interest. There is a real opportunity to grow the game if they can market it right. Just need kids to start playing some road hockey again.

The only real letdown for canada this tournament were the anthem singers. There were a couple below average followed by last night's botching of it.

I'll stop you there. At this level, Parayko can be tall, he was f***ing terrible. Cirelli was invisible and terrible, plenty of these guys can kill penalties. lol.

Both of those guys were in WAY over their heads and brought very little positive to the table.

Hey, I was on the record after the game vs the Swedes calling Parayko a right shot version of the bad version of Nurse.

When Canada heads to Olympics there will be more penalties called by IIHF refs. Canada needs to figure out who can PK on the European ice and take a regular shift. I'd argue is a regular shift player needed when they'll be running 3 lines in the playoffs?

Did anyone else see the passion that Brad Tkachuk had in his post game interview. God Damn
Man, I'd be pissed as an Ottawa fan. Brady's overzealous play at this level makes you wonder where's that passion wearing our jersey? Plus, because he hurt himself running around all tournament now you are down your best player for the key stretch drive to make the playoffs for the first time in a long while.

I mean he has not played any meaningful hockey in how long? I don't think it needs to be viewed negatively. If I'm Ottawa I'm very excited that I have that kind of character player in the organization.

Did you guys see how jacked up he was when he scored that first USA goal? That shit can't be taught.

I thought Cirelli was horrid for most of the tournament and the most obvious fish out of water, but had a good final game overall. Your point still stands though. His first shift of the final was a D zone draw and he was all over the place, almost cost us early. As you said, simply cannot have players that skate slow even if they get away with it in the NHL.

Didn’t think Cooper was great through the first 3 games, but the decision to move Stone off a line with skill players was very smart. Im pretty sure the switch was made after Stone missed McDavid by a mile off a 2 on 1 pass in the 2nd. Those opportunities maybe happen once or twice in a game like this and you can’t waste them.

Big defense is critical, but for international ice skating needs to be the #1, 2 and 3 as initial qualifications. No Parayko, no Toews, and I even have struggles with Morrissey. Don’t see what everyone else does there. On international ice I’d rather have Nurse than any of those 3 (assuming it’s this year Nurse) on the basis of skating alone.

Team came together and performed right when it mattered, but it was in spite of a lot of these poor roster decisions.

I thought all 3 of them struggled at times as well. Toews at least will probably be a lock though just because of familiarity. Also fwiw Italy will apparently be NHL sized ice.

It seems that the Olympics will be on NHL ice.

I think the conventional wisdom is that on nhl ice and nhl refs it’s ok.

Not sure if that’s accurate or not though.

Couple of thoughts:
  • What type of impact if Pietro and Montour had played?
  • Intriguing thinking a year from now of Celebrini on McDavid's wing
  • Bedard rebounds...does he have a spot next year?
  • Hoping Hyman continues to get back to where he was and on McD's wing next year
  • Loved Point. Very smart player.
  • Knew MacKinnon was good...but boy...he is GOOD
  • Reinhart left me wanting.
  • Always thought Bennet was overrated till this tournament. Best 4th line Center for this type of event.
  • Morissey was a big loss for this game. Such a likeable player and trustworthy. The Coach's RNH on defense
The off-ice conflicts amped this up way beyond what I thought was possible. Tarrific Tourny!

No kidding. Had to be one of the worst renditions of our anthem ever.

I think Brady is probably the most invested Sens player and by far the most passionate. Awful tough to get this level of intensity into every NHL game, and that would apply to every guy that participated in this short, winner take all tournament. Ottawa has had a whole lot of issues throughout the years, but he certainly isn't one of them.
