Finland playing their hearts out but simply don’t have the horses

Can’t even escape the Skinner hate in this thread FFS

I was just going thru the thread and noticed that there are more posts mentioning Skinner than there are mentioning our guys that are actually playing in the tourney. Was hoping this would be the only thread to get away from the constant rhetoric that has been beaten to death over and over. But nope. At least it hasn’t infected the CFL thread yet. ;)

I forgot about that. Team Europe for Russia/Germany/Czech etc for the 5th team would spice up the tourney
That team would be a favourite to win it all. Forwards might look like:

Kaprizov-Draisaitl-Kucherov
Ovechkin-Malkin-Pastrnak
Svechnikov-Hischier-Panarin
Stutzle-Kopitar-Buchnevich

I'm sure I'm missing some forwards. You'd have Josi-Seider as your top pairing, guys like Sergachev and Zub, and 3 Russian goalies. That team could give Canada and the US a run for their money, if the chemistry part of it worked out.

I mean team Europe, if they went that route, would absolutely not include a bunch of guys you have lol. Someone did this on Twitter, and they're deeper than Finland (though there's more options)

A top 5 forward in the world is a “puck hog” because he looked off another top 5 player in the world and took a shot? Lol.

Instead, maybe he saw an opening and felt he was in a good place to score. I mean, he’s f***ing good too, right. I don’t like MacKinnon, but I can’t be a hater because he didn’t pass to 97, Good grief. To satisfy puck hog accusations maybe the NHL should rate each player in a hierarchy and institute a rule that the lower rated person must pass to the higher rated person on every play. That would eliminate this situation (and probably a few good scoring opportunities too).

What a crock.
It wasn’t that at all. I think Struddy said it best- “you are supposed to move up as a unit and possession is king”. MacKinnon didn’t use his linemates and tried to do it all himself. You look at the OT winner and can see Crosby understood that.

It’s a bit annoying seeing McDavid playing with lesser linemates in this tournament compared to in Edmonton. I’d like to see him with Crosby and Point.

Marner is such a zero in games played at this pace. He simply can't elevate.

In almost any other year he would have been an easy omission, but Canada is a little thin in top end talent for the first time ever. Even at that, give me Schiefele all day over him. Or Thomas. Those guys actually know how to compete and adapt their game for their role.

SO guys, I know Binnington made some big stops in OT, but he can't start next game. He's the only reason it went to OT. Goals 1 and 2 were just atrocious.

The Swedes were getting utterly dominated and were generating NOTHING, then Binnington just whiffs on that first goal, giving Sweden life and completely changing the game.

Without that goal, sincerely, Canada wins like 4-0 or 5-1, it's not close. It's so weird how many people just don't understand this.

The whole thing is so NHL.

"Can't have extra players!"

"What happens if another guy gets hurt, we can't run with 5 guys for multiple games"

"Ok you can name a guy""

"Can we bring him to Montreal in case we need him in an emergency?"

"No, he can only go to Boston"

"Why?"

"Reasons"
It's not the NHL. It's the other teams likely stating that they all agreed to a set of rules... too bad for Canada.

The NHL with the self troll is extremely funny and extremely on brand.

No, it's the NHL. They shape shifted to change the rule when they realized it made no sense, but then arbitrarily decided he can't physically be in Montreal for no logical reason.

I don't think anybody else cares if Thomas Harley is physically in Montreal vs. waiting in Boston. It's totally irrelevant.

is this one of the most unlikable US teams ever? at least those teams in the past had awesome guys like Weight and Guerin

this new batch of Yanks consists of d-bags like Matt Tkachuk and Auston Matthews
Don't forget Brady Tkachuk, Jack Eichel, and the always-pleasant JT Miller...

that's quite the collection of d-bags on one roster.

Hearing Makar being ill is precisely why the roster formation logic is so flawed for these things.

You have an opportuntity to pick the 18 skaters and 2 goalteders you want to dress every game, then you have 3 empty spots to stash guys in the press box. If you want to pick a few role players for the 12 spots to ensure you can deploy your preferred systems, go ahead and do it. But the press box guys should be guys capable to step into any role that requires help due to injury.

So down goes Makar, how does Sanheim help fill that void.

Whereas if they had a skilled puck moving d-man as the 7th d-man, they can at least try to fill that void. If the injury ends up being to a depth player that was chosen to kill penalties, you're much more likely to be able to convince one of your skill players to adjust their game a bit to help in that role for 2-8 minutes of ice times than you are to have a depth player adjust their game to replace the skills of your best players for 20-80 minutes of ice time.

Not having Pietrangelo was the first dagger, choosing Doughty was the second dagger, having the rest of the blue line more or less made up of mediocre players is the third dagger.

Darnell Nurse has put himself in a position where his play over the last few years has put his reputation in the gutter, but I have difficulty believing he couldn't outplay any of Morrissey, Parayko, Doughty or Sanheim in this tournament based on his play this year only. Everyone left back there is just so damn slow.

This, Just brutal selections as a whole. Parayko and Doughty especially slow. So frustrating listening to Doughty's pre-tourney interview because it comes off as he knew all along he was gonna be a part of this as long as he was 'healthy enough' to play...despite literally missing half the season.

Parayko made zero sense too

Our advantage as a team is speed, especially in relation to USA which I think we might be able to expose in this regard if we open the game up. Problem is we're going to have difficulty opening the game up because our bottom 4 can't move. And even if we do open the game up, they still have more than enough speed to make our guys look bad in transition.

Their defence is small and fast, ours is big and slow. We'll see which one wins.

See my issue isn't even as much Parayko as they picked him to be the 3rd RD and primary option to kill penalties. So fine, that reasonable but if he's that, why do you pick Sanheim who's role would be best explained as being a penalty killer depth role (in a best on best tournament) as the guy to sit in the pressbox.

If you're picking the top 6 to fit roles, why wouldn't you pick the 7th guy to be someone who could help cover any of the other roles. They picked this like teams build an NHL roster where your 7th guy is meant to step in as the 6th and the rest of the crew moves up because you are limited in what you can spend on depth. In a short tournament with so many players at their disposal and no cap limits, the goal should be that the 7th dman could fill in for any of the roles so that you keep your intended 6th dman who's there to be a primary option on the PK as a 6th dman and and primary option on the PK.

As I said earlier, it's much easier to find a way to replace the 2-8 minutes of PK time and 15-60 minutes of bottom pairing defense collectively from the group if your 6th Dman and first PK option gets injured than it is to collectively replace 2-8 minutes of PP time and 20-80 minutes of a top pairing puck moving dman time if someone in the top 4 goes down, so pick a guy that helps in the harder to support scenario.

Maybe I'm just underating Sanheim due to limited viewings but nothing I've heard suggests he's a reasonable substitute for what Makar can do or even Theodore or Pietrangelo for that matter. Sure he could have replaced Parayko adequately, but they should have aimed higher.

All things considered this shows Weegar may have been that best fit for a 7th. Regular on the PP, almost 2 minutes a night on the PK, 90th percentile in speed good offensive production and puck movement. Even has played the left side before despite being a right shot. So he probably could have been part of the collective solution regardless of which of the 6 were injured. The only negative is his height, but I don't think it's something that impacts his play negatively.
