For all the crap Marner takes for being soft, including from me, he scores the OT winner vs SWE and grabs two primary assists in the Finals.

Seeing him move the needle is a good reminder that you don’t need to finish checks and throw hits to make a huge difference.

This kind of shows me that we may want to stop trying to turn Pettersson into a tough guy and instead focus on getting him back to his skill game.

Just a few thoughts. We won yey! Bieksa's prison rules comment. Anyone catch Marchand sticking out his knee after the whistle? (I'm sorry but he'll always be a rat). Binnington got the job done. I hate to say it, but if Brady Tkachuk is offered for Petey we should consider it (package with Norris and Quinn gets his besties). Happy to see Sid win. I was screaming at McDavid to do something (the few times I cheer on him to score) and then he scored. Whoever designed that play deserves a gift card. I don't think the Americans should feel too bad about the loss - you left the best player in hockey wide open in front of the net and he scores. I wonder if more teams have decided to join the potential Marner sweepstakes.

I'm taking a break from hockey for the next couple of weeks. I put this Four Nations tournament in the same category of the three-on-three tournament at the all-star game. About as riveting as a beer-league game at Eight Rinks. Who cares?

Elias Pettersson is now the only Canuck in this lackluster tournament, along with Lankinen who doesn't figure to play much for Finns. Good. Fewer Vancouver players to risk injury.

The 'lucky' NHL players are the ones heading home or out on vacation for a couple of weeks.

Lol

But elite 3rd liner Matt Cooke never ever hung a knee.

Great teams will do what it takes ocwin.

I don't get your point here. Cooke was a dirty player and I'm one of the ones who thought he was an elite 3rd liner in his prime here. Marchand is a dirty player but I can acknowledge that he's a star player who is loved by many Bruins fans.

I don't think great teams need players to purposely injure a player by dangerously sticking out his knee after the whistle.

No way the Sens take EP for Brady, and I say this as an EP booster. Brady is a power forward and game breaker on his own, EP needs a supporting class to shine. It's like the difference between a lifted 4x4 and a Bughatti. Both are great vehicles and excel in situations which they are designed for, but only one is getting you up a mountain.

I want to thank Donald Trump for accomplishing the impossible. He almost single-handedly turned a kind of lame, gimmicky Four Nations Tournament into riveting, much watch TV. And in so doing, united Canadians from Coast to Coast to Coast.

As Canadians, we often like to bitch and complain--about our politicians, our political parties, Western alienation; Justin Trudeau; COVID restrictions; housing, the cost of living; the weather; etc...etc.

But it takes recent events to galvanize Canadians, and remind us what it is to be privileged to live out our lives in the 'True North, Strong and Free'. I mean, if we aren't going to stand up for the country--who will?

Canada is also the most multicultural country in the world. What other nation has a Hockey Night in Canada telecast in English, French and now Punjabi? If multiculturalism can't survive in Canada--it can't survive anywhere. And during this journey, Canada has become one of the most admired countries on the planet.

So I was dead wrong. The Four Nations Tournament ended in blaze of glory. Flag sales are way up. The vision and promise of our country is crystal clear across the land.

And I really believe Canadians are more proud of their country than a divided America is right now. And who saw that coming?

gretzky's association with trump is shockingly more offensive to me than ovechkin's association with putin, which has the plausible deniability of a forced relationship ("or else"), while the former is voluntary
Ovechkin is married into Putin's circle and even helped recruit kids along with other Russian celebs into his politics. He chose that road and it helps provide Putin faux-legitimacy (i.e. his ridiculous PR hockey games).

Still, Gretzky acts even more ridiculous because he has zero reason to ever lick Trump's nuts aside from billionaire class conscience.

Wait a minute, USA got a regulation win and an OT Loss, that's 4 points. Canada got an OT win and a regulation loss, that's 2 points. I guess we lose on aggregate points /s

You nailed it .....::like Joe Carter off Mitch Williams. Like Bo Jackson popping the Boz. Like Charles Adler on a Monday bitching about the federal govt.

Legend.....

You are far more crafty than I once thought that you were a long time ago.

Which begs the question, which team was the best hockey team ever assembled? 1987 Canada Cup? 2010? 2002? 2014? 2016?
The Team Canada roster for the 1976 Canada Cup had 18 Hall of Famers, and it would have been 21 if Ken Dryden, Bernie Parent, and Brad Park hadn't been injured.

The defense included Bobby Orr, Denis Potvin, and the Habs big 3 of Robinson, Savard, and Lapointe. Didn't exactly miss having Park.

Scotty Bowman was the Head Coach.

Got up, got a coffee, and turned on the full half hour YouTube video of McDavid’s winner followed by the celebrations.

When this thing was announced, it seemed kind of destined to flop. But as we got closer and closer to it, and the players started to buzz, and current events unfolded in the manner in which they did, this tournament became a nexus point for hockey fans, casual hockey fans, and more as the hockey on display and the current political zeitgeist collided to create an event and game that felt like it was a lot more than just a hockey game.

I don’t know if those circumstances will ever come together like that again (for outside of hockey stuff, I really f***ing hope not). But it made for an intensity level like no other.

And it sure beat the hell out of watching players six beers deep sleepwalk around an All Star Game.

Didn't Orr go to bat for Trump as well?

and people call me . . . well, you know

This game means more to Canada than 2002, 2010 or 2014 ever could.

This represented a country that is not going to be bullied by a tyrant dictator.

I don't think this is going to be a regular thing, honestly. There are many team owners who are pissed off because their stars are now sidelined during a playoff push. We were very fortunate Quinn was not able to go (both because he likely puts the US over the top and because he was already injured).

It’s been confirmed that we will be getting a World Cup of Hockey every 2 years for the foreseeable future. So best on best hockey is here to stay for a while. But what I was meaning is that I don’t know (and somewhat hope not) that the stakes will ever feel as high as they did in this event.

This is this generations 1972 Summit Series, no doubt about it. Not quite as impactful, because it wasn't a direct 8 game series vs one opponent, but it's as close as we have ever seen. The US is a threat to our way of life in the same way USSR was a threat to North America - I can't believe that's the truth, but it is.

Inject that thrilling win into my veins baby, what a win.

f*** you Donald
f*** you Wayne

Also - trading EP for Brady Tkachuk? Are you crazy? Buy high sell low mentality again. Did you guys forget how good Petey was during the COVID cup? He'll bounce back, again, and these dumb whispers of Brady Tkachuk for EP will end. Recency bias over the top. Tkachuk had a great game but let's be real here.

I've always laughed at the Marner hate - he's out produced Matthews and Nylander in the playoffs yet he gets the most hate because rah rah hits! The pass to Bennett was insanely nice and he drew 2 defenders before McDavid put it away - elite play and iconic that it went through Matthews.

I wouldn’t say Mitch Marner was dazzling all tournament long - but he was a key factor in several huge moments, including the biggest one of them all.

I think he’s going somewhere other than Toronto this summer - he feels destined to end up in California, Nevada or Broadway - and he’ll end up hoisting a Cup before the Maple Leafs do.

Quinn Hughes was the single biggest missing piece for any team in this tournament. But Canada’s defense continuing to perform as well as it did despite losing Pietrangelo, Theodore and Morrisey for the final game was really impressive.

I'd say a bigger (or equally impactful) loss for them was MacAvoy, he dominated the Canadian forwards in the first game. We had zero answer for his hitting. Without him, their only defensive studs were Werenski and Slavin. Fox had an awful tournament, Faber was average, Sanderson scored but was quite green.

Whoever said it,

yeah I don't think he'll ever be the guy. On Hagel's goal he skated directly into a swarm of players and Matthews is usually f***ed off behind the play or not moving his feet.

Marner and Matthews is a horrible combination.

That was the moment I'd say where I knew we had 'em. McAvoy is their best defender. Slavin is dynamite in transition but he's more turnstile with the puck in the O-zone. Reminds me a lot of Tanev but slightly better offensively.

I loved that everyone calling for too many men last night.

Is the rule not that the team with too many has to touch the puck unless it's blatantly obvious they've been playing with 6 for like a while? I thought that was the rule but I don't really like rules.
