Forslund contract negotiations

Dundon has made it no secret that he’ll spend his $$ to improve the on-ice product and is willing to cut costs everywhere else. It’s cold and callous, but also hard to argue with the results thus far.

I love John as much as the next guy, but I’ll have fun watching Hurricanes hockey as long as we’re competitive.

On the one hand, it's interesting that 17 of 18 agreed to....something new. But out of all these employees, Forslund is likely one of the few that is clearly the best. I get it from both sides.

And there's the counterspin. Spin, counterspin -- and a statement from both sides that the door is still open.

We're still seeing negotiations here, folks. All is not yet lost.

(Personally, I say that if you can't make up the difference in cash, give him a chunk of the team. He really is that much a part of the franchise.)

Much like the situation with the checkers, I think covid has made these games of chicken easier to play and harder to win for both sides. Don't want to pay what I'm suggesting, theres plenty of time to network and find someone who will. Don't want to earn what I'm suggesting, there's no hockey going on anyway so you're welcome to do whatever.

Love that idea, and I mean if it worked for Mario Lemieux...

If Forslund really does have his eyes on being the major voice of hockey for NBC after Doc is done (which seems to be coming quick) I don't think having an ownership stake in the Canes is something he'd be interested in right now.

Not surprising. Dundon's done a lot for this organization, but the things he values very rarely matches the things the fans do.

Someone should let him know the Forslund/Tripp duo was voted the literal best broadcast duo in the league.

In fairness, he might not care. Kaiton was “beloved” and shown the door because he was a net loss. Two years later - no one cares.

I bet a) we overestimate how much John being “the best in the league” actually affects the business, and b) the appeal of the national job might throw a wrinkle in things.

Somehow I bet that if you don’t like John being shown the door, the 84 cents you’re removing from the Canes revenue by boycotting a Marley Drug commercial and watching the away feed instead isn’t doing much to sway Dundon. Want him back? Refuse to buy tickets. The play with this is “my fandom of this team would be in question if you don’t do this”, not “I will still pay as much attention as before but won’t specifically watch the FS broadcast”. Not sure when the broadcasting contract is up, but it’d be a lot more impactful when you write your angry emails to say “I’m done spending a dime on this team” instead of “I’m a partial season ticket holder but when I watch away games it’ll be the away feed”.

Maybe not. But Doc did double duty with the Devils for years. It's possible.

I agree mostly. There’s a tipping point...and this wouldn’t be it. It would totally suck, tho.

The tipping point would be a massive fan favorite player getting traded - or more likely, Brind’Amour getting lowballed on his next contract. I can totally see that.

Eh I’ll wait to flip a shit until either Forslund or Canes sign elsewhere or someone else. Still in the maybe chance. Maybe I’m not understanding what they are negotiating. Are they negotiating the 20-21 season or just the continuation of this one? That’s a hell of a difference.

If this comes to truly pass, it really wasn't that hard to see coming. This ownership and front office have consistently put a price on things, poked at pressure points, and isn't afraid to move on or walk away if they don't get their way. We've seen this tactic to varying ends with broadcasters, front office personnel, players, AHL affiliate, and on and on. It's interesting to see that broadcaster is the one where so many are drawing a line. Again, none of this is to say I don't value Forslund or want him to leave or that they won't work things out. I just think if you're a fan of this team, there's not as much room for emotional attachment with this regime, cause they don't seem to have it or value it.
