Only three NHL games with Winnipeg Jets, but a notable career in minor leagues, mostly with Kansas City Blades.

In 2001 he moved to Italy and later got the citizenship, playing in the Olympic team in 2006, as well as in four World Championships.

One of the few openly gay former pro hockey players Janne Puhakka (Liiga & QMJHL, U18 WJC) shot and killed in Finland age 29.

A sad/f***ed up realization of mine is that I’ve only heard of three professional hockey players who are/were gay. One is Nashville prospect Luke Prokop, but the other two were murdered.

Oilers draft pick from 1998, Kristian Antila dead at 44.

Signed an NHL contract and played in minors in 2002-04. Retired in 2005 following a groin injury.

Another former Luleå player. He shared names with a Swedish musician, yet I knew the name rang a bell for another reason as I read the headline. Luleå during the lockout season was his final team before retiring. He was acquired to replace Daniel Henriksson who was a pretty talented goalie who’d done well filling Jarmo Myllys’ skates after the latter returned to Finland, but Antila was apparently plagued by injuries and he’s featured on a list of the worst player acquisitions in team history. I guess Antila’s struggles was how come Manny Fernandez joined later in the season.

At any rate, he was a talented goalie prospect and has tragically passed way too soon at 44.

Former Hartford Whalers head coach Larry Kish

Dwight Foster played 541 games in the NHL with the Boston Bruins, Colorado Rockies, New Jersey Devils, and Detroit Red Wings.

Former Red Wing, Bruin, Canadien and Bear Wrestler Marcel Bonin passed away last weekend. Cup winner on the '55 Wings and the '58-to-'60 Habs.

I was looking for an English-language URL (my sources were French, his daughter's FB page also in French and the moment of silence observed before the Habs-Rangers game, which obviously doesn't have an URL), and for whatever reason the first hit I got was from, off all things, the Daily Mail.
