The more I watch it the more I think “Freak Accident” should be dropped from the discussion. Wtf was his leg doing that high?
He made a beeline to make the check, picked on the play he then sticks his leg out to make sure AJ doesn't easily skate by him. Is he trying to kill him, of course not. But like you said, idiot with a past history of being careless regarding other players health.............chickens came home to roost. Would bet anything he is in complete denial and loves the accident theory. What the f*** was Petgrave doing? Get that idiot out of hockey. This is manslaughter not a freak accident with zero cause
He’s thrown off balance by the pick / contact with the other player. He’s completely out of control, but if you think there’s any malice in it you’re wrong.
That’s despite the number of Neanderthals making it a race issue on social media. It’s honestly pathetic.

Exactly. This "hit", is one of the most irresponsible plays I've ever seen on a sheet of ice. It almost looks intentional, like a karate kick. I'm flabbergasted at the "hit". There's never a reason to raise your skate blade towards another player. Ever.No reason to ever have your skate at throat level while making a hit. "Killing" him was likely an accident, but the foot in the air was an intentional brain dead play by a goon.
Thanks. This is gonna be perception, but basically skater A (the one who ended Johnson's life) was skating above the slot and kind of got side swiped, honestly interfered with from what I saw, and looked like he was losing his balance. Instead of just going down he tried to throw his body into Johnson to take someone with him, but by trying to force his body over in his direction while losing his balance, his legs just went up in the air and one caught Johnson square in the throat as he was skating by. Honestly, I understand why people don't want to watch the video, but from a gore standpoint, it's not really like you see a throat getting slit. There's contact, lots of blood on the ice and him skating off with people holding on to him. At least that's the version I saw. Don't think it's gonna keep anybody up at night to watch it.
Are neck guards the answer? Would a neckguard have saved his life who knows? The play at a minimum was extremely reckless.Cant speculate on intent but it was a strange sequence with the player he was intenting to hit was not in his direct line. RIP to Adam.I remember travelling to Boston to play hockey when I was 18. Neckguards have always been mandatory for us but in Boston, the players on the other American teams didn't wear neck guards but had elongated cages on their helmets.
Some of the players on my team had larger neckguards whereas others (like myself, for example) had "neckguards" but they were not what I would call overly protective. I've never liked wearing an overly padded neckguard but some of the fellas on my team had ones that looked like small neck braces.
I do wonder if the NHL is going to look to implement something as a result of this tragedy.
How about some time off from society? So does anyone know if that guy is taking time off from hockey?
Yeah that was intentional. Not the result obviously but he got his foot up for sure. I dont think he should go to jail for life but this guy should still go to jail.No reason to ever have your skate at throat level while making a hit. "Killing" him was likely an accident, but the foot in the air was an intentional brain dead play by a goon.
Yeah, think if I was him I'd just hole up somewhere. Turn off social media and just shut the world out for a whileHow about some time off from society?
I know Petgrave personally from his UNB days. There’s not a mean bone in that guys body.Thanks.
I ended up watching a quick clip. Such an unfortunate thing to happen - watched a lot of Petgrave in Oshawa. I sure hope his mentals are alright… even if he were trying to get a piece of him (I hate that I had to say it that way) , no way he wanted THAT outcome.
Fast game, split second reactions - he does need account for his terrible decision ; IF he was looking to initiate contact with a flailing leg.
Goes without saying - but feel awful for Johnson and his friends/family.
