I spent nearly a decade trying to explain to people that Jim Benning simply had no idea what he was watching when he was looking at a hockey game. He wasn't just a 'good scout' that didn't have business/management skills - he was legitimately a terrible scout who did not understand hockey or what was happening in front of him in a hockey game.

Your average idiot casual fan walking down the street in Vancouver understood hockey better than Jim Benning.

That year Tanev's dad is referring to, Tanev made less than Sbisa, who we acquired because he was big & strong instead of angling for Theodore in the Kesler deal
This was before we signed Tanev to a 5x$4.45M deal?

Tanev has an interesting career arc. He went from playing 53, 42, and 55 games to not missing a game at age 30, bouncing back to being the elite shutdown defenseman he was (while not missing a game at age 31). This year at age 35 he has missed only one game so far.

Holy f***ing shit. I have no words lmao. Unbelievable.

It's the literal equivalent of an NHL GM looking at a 25 year old Patrice Bergeron's PIM totals and saying that he was a creampuff who was 'soft as baby shit'.

Just total incompetence and a total lack of understanding of how hockey works. And people still insisting that Benning was 'just a bit over his head and a tool for Aquilini to meddle' or some such should be forced to sit and read quotes like this Clockwork Orange style.

Jim Benning was the worst GM in NHL history. Jim Benning was the most incompetent GM in NHL history. Jim Benning was the dumbest GM in NHL history. And it isn't close to #2 on any front.

This team would have been better with Chris Tanev on it in every single season that he left, including this one.

The guy took a 20% paycut off what his market value was to stay here and we turfed him so we could try to spend like drunken sailors in free agency, and we couldn't even do THAT successfully

Kind of odd that Miller rolled into a scrum with his gloves off just looking for a fight -

What a bizarre bout as well. Size mismatch looked strange on Miller watching the mechanics of the fight

Innovative (in a bad way) unheard of retroactive trade protection.
But his hand picked coach Ned Flanders upp'd him in the stupid department (didn't think that was possible) by employing a legitimate 3rd line checking center as.........a winger for the Sedins at the start of the season. That bumped Vrbata off that line (who wasn't doing too badly having scored 30+ goals riding shotgun the year before with them) to.....nobody (as the only other guy that showed any kind of chemistry with Vrbata was the center they dealt to get Sutter - Bonino). Heh, then Ned Flanders makes sophmore Horvat the 3C (he never was great in that role....later developed into something passable but hardly taking advantage of his strengths).

whenever I think my opinion of Jim Benning cannot get any worse . . . I am proven wrong

Which is inconceivable, because I am . . . well, you know

Must be something in the water here in Vancouver. I think Hamhuus rarely missed any games prior to being a Canuck. He promptly misses a large chunk of games in his first season as a Canuck. I'd say the same with respect to Keith Ballard but I *think* he might've been damaged goods when we acquired him (was injured and or playing injured & the issue got worse when he played here).

gillis suggested the pattern (in general, not ballard-specific) was all the extra travel, which is why he invested so much time and effort trying to work with the schedule-makers to get a more equitable schedule

that said we have had some longtime ironmen here too: linden, morrison, henrik

I am never ever ever EVER changing my f***ing avatar.

That's despite the best efforts of a certain former #11 giving him a dirty hit while Linden was defenseless on the ice. A real piece of sh*t that guy was.
