Boom!

Hopefully Porkins follows Max and stays on target!

For some reason this season has been the most difficult to get solid info out of the Red league's but I hope that Porky does the right thing too.

I don't get anything more than statistical updates on Porky for the most part but his coach has said in a couple of interviews that he is a "very good young player" with a "great future". I think he was referring to the KHL but don't know for certain.

Max is a really good player but I am still curious as to how far his game has changed since he left NA. I believe that he is driven enough to where if anything we will see improvement but I have seen EU hockey systems chew up some pretty talented kids and leave them wanting.

We are so deep in talented prospects that it is crazy.

Finally!

It sure beats Jason Morgan, Donald MacLean, Matt Zultek, and Richard Seeley

We've been deep for a few years now. Even without having Schenn, Lokti, Hickey, Voynov, Bernier, and all the other high end prospects, our prospect pool is STILL very good. We lack top end talent clearly but we have a LOT of really, really promising prospects. Gotta love good drafting...

We don't need that top-end talent anymore. Detroit has been so successful for so many years because they develop depth-type prospects and allow them to mature. By the time they reach the NHL, they are ready to play on a cheap contract. We don't need centers any time soon - Kopitar is 25, Richards is 28, Stoll is 30. Kopitar will be our top center for the next 5-10 years and is just now hitting his prime. Richards and Stoll still have 3-5 solid years, and hopefully more than that. There's also Trevor Lewis and Jeff Carter, if need be, and we can take our time with a guy like Nick Shore to develop into a solid third-line center.

We have top-end talent incoming on the wings, too - something we haven't had in a very long time. Pearson, Vey, and Toffoli are a very talented group that we will hopefully see in the next three or four years, potentially replacing Penner and Williams.

Anyone know how Deslauriers is looking?

Strangely enough, our weakest position now is goaltending.

I am confused as to why everyone thinks Derek Forbort was going to be some world beater(and now people are disappointed)...

He was picked 15th.....Not 5th(Had the Kings not drafted him he might have fell to 20th's).

If Derek makes it as a bottom pairing Defender on the Kings roster, Mission done.

The idea is to get 2 roster players per draft. So far so good.

Drafts are giant Crap shoots. Lombardi has done well so far(despite the odd first round picks).

Good point, sometimes we get ahead of ourselves.

i think too many people look at all 1st rounders as future all-stars. if they don't live up to that it was a failed pick.

If they had drafted Etem instead, they'd already have him signed. :sarcasm:

Not only would he be signed, but he'd be playing on a line with Carter-Richards. I assume we won't be seeing Forbort till maybe midway next year, we drafted the guy in 2010 and he wouldn't have made his debut until 2014 lol. It's great to see he's signing and definitely hope he pans out but some of you guys keep saying his ceiling is Keaton Ellerby and that just scares the **** out of me

About half of the 2010 draft prospects taken in the 1st are playing in the NHL, and quite a few of them are struggling this season. Gudbransson is having his ups and downs and he was taken 3rd overall. Fowler isn't exactly lighting it up for a defenseman known for his offensive game. Granlund has struggled to produce. Nino Niederreiter is another one who struggled to cut the NHL. And Etem has what, 3 goals in 28 games? He's not exactly making big contributions, least not yet.

The immediate name that jumps out is Tarasenko, but he was an unknown and there were strong indications that he wouldn't have come over to North America. The other name to me that stands out more who was slated to go in the 1st round but dropped to the 2nd round is Justin Faulk, but I think there are going to be more teams than the Kings regretting on selecting him with their first pick. At the very least the Kings have someone who is close to NHL ready in Tyler Toffoli, who has one less goal than Etem in 20 less games.

it's a step, one step closer for him to the NHL. he still has a lot of work to do. 2014-15 is the first i think we see of him. before that will be due only to injuries. i think that will be his time table. DL has clearly not been in rush to move him up and let him develop slowly. i don't foresee him changing this now. the team has been deep enough now for years on D, that DL can let his D prospects slowly mature and not be rushed.

2014-15 will also be the year that Greener is a UFA. i don't anticipate any of the 'stay at home' guys around in 2014-15, with maybe the exception of Ellerby should DL decide to re-sign him.

And Oscar Moller made his debut the year after being drafted....how did that work out? But hey Etem has 3 goals in almost 30 games....probably the same guys that were telling us how great Smith-Pelly was last year and how we really missed out....now they just changed the great player they saw that nobody else did to Etem.

Oscar Moller made his debut because the Kings sucked back then, he wouldn't even make the lineup right now

Y'know what's funny about these people harping on the Forbort pick, they whine about him not being ready until maybe 2014, as if the Kings need to rush him to the main stage now. He just turned 21 a month ago.

Guess where Willie Mitchell, a little known 8th round pick by the Devils in '96 was when he was 21? Playing college hockey at Clarkson. He spent two full seasons in the AHL after that before he cracked an NHL roster, and that was thanks in part to expansion, with the Wild acquiring Mitchell, who at the time was 23, in a trade deadline deal for Sean O'Donnell.

Mitchell became a full-time regular with the Wild when he was 24 and slowly became recognized as one of the game's elite shutdown defenseman. He elevated his game further when he signed with the Canucks as a free agent in 2006, when he was 29.

I would like to see the Kings and Forbort take a similar road path in his development. Whatever games he gets with the Monarchs this year will be a trial period to see how he performs. He should spend the entirety of next season in Manchester and will most likely spend a second year there, unless he somehow surprises everyone and shows that he is ready for the next stage.

Just because he isn't in the NHL now doesn't make him a bad choice. Show some patience people, and realize that the Kings don't need him playing now. He was taken with the long term future of the team in mind, not as an immediate need. I shouldn't have to be telling you this but it seems that some people's heads are too thick to grasp this concept.

If Etem was from Toronto, no one would even care who the guy is.

The fact it is even a discussion about guys picked 15th....Is stupid.

These are not top ten picks that missed. These are guys that take time to develop into NHL roster players.

Grand Forks North Dakota is a flat cold town up near (a little over 100 miles) the Canadian border. It gets really cold there. It has a pretty cool downtown area (sort of) and a ton of neat old victorian style homes. The hotels are always sold out and expensive when the Souix play (even the dirty super 8 can cost you over 100bucks us a night). As far as towns go its average. As far as people go its great. That place lives eats and sleeps ND hockey. For that it is a great place.

Forbort is a local hero there as are the rest of the team. The college is a pretty good place. If you head west from GF you get wide open expanses until you hit Rugby (the geographical center of North America as the signs say when you drive into the town) and there are a couple of big lakes too.

Why the travel guide? Forbort is about to leave a place where there really isn't anything to do at all for a big part of the year and start playing pro hockey in MCH and then L.A. The differences are going to be huge.

I am one of the posters who seem to be luke warm in regards to Forbort but that isn't really the case. Forbort is going to learn how to use his size balance and natural skating ability to become a very good NHL #4/6 dman. A SAH hybrid type who can make a great first pass and smart decisions in his own zone while being acceptable in the O zone.

He has a great natural balance and is a solid kid. I am certain that is why Futa and DL were interested in him more so than any speculating about his future O potential. His balance and instincts make him a natural skater who is impossible to knock down or move once he sets up.

His high level of compete and quality of character make him a guy that is difficult to play against. His hockey IQ is in the very good range, not great but he doesn't get beaten by being out of position or by letting someone draw him away from where he should be.

He is one of those guys who plays better when he is playing angry or with emotion. He needs to work on becoming a better S.O.B. in his own zone. He plays with grit but he needs to become a mean smart quick Dman to first make the team and second become a stalwart.

I see him as a replacement for Scuderi or possibly Mitchell given time and development, both of which we have to give and to do.

I liked our picking him when we did and I still do. I don't question ever the kids who go after we have picked. It serves no purpose to a team that has an exceptional track record at drafting kids who make it to the NHL.

Could we have hit a home run with Etem? Sure but that is going to happen. We took a kid who can really skate well, had (and has even better now) great gap control and played(s) a really sound physical game at the 15 spot.

We got a really good young Dman who in a couple of years is going to be a very good reliable hard working tough second pairing Dman for us.

When did that become a bad thing?

Oh, and if you are ever in North Dakota and visiting Grand Forks drive over the bridge into Minny (and then turn around). After you do get back onto the highway and drive up to Winnipeg. Lots of great hockey there.

Oscar made the line up because he was adorable and Lombardi couldn't say no those cheeks.

Babyface killa'!

I think we have the same whatever prospects we always had. It's just DL's development program has made NHL players out of what would be junk in other systems. Imagine RNH in our program. He'd still be in the AHL right now...leading them in scoring for the second straight year.

In most other NHL systems, King and Nolan would not be intriguing players. We got a player in Ellerby who was a 1st rounder in tools, got developed into a 5th rounder, then we've made him in to at least a 3rd rounder now in a few months (if not more).
