Right let's have the nhl sue the IOC because they want to participate in the summer Olympics. Good Job as usual with your insightful posts.

The nhl as moronic as it is is setting itself for the guaranteed participation in 2022 with China about to win the Olympics and it's desire to grow in that market. And with the IOC's mandate to do WHATEVER is possible to make sure they participate with the best, 2018 is looking more likely as they'll succumb to some of the nhl's demands.

This sport doesn't have an event anywhere near the World Cup other then the Olympics. This nhl world cup will be watched by literally no one whereas you have an audience of over 500 million tuning in to Gold Medal games at the Olympics.

Let's see, so where is the best promotion?

One of the arguments many people made was that the soccer leagues will shut down for FIFA events and other international stuff and/or base their schedules around FIFA's calendar.

So much for that.
The IOC "decided" to hold a winter olympics in an almost impossible climate and had to reschedule the whole event to the summer?

and their unwillingness to change their schedule to suit the World Championships or their possible unwillingness to shut down for the Olympics:

This would be relevant if Olympic hockey were traditinoally held during the summer games until the IOC suddenly decided to change to winter on account of giving the games to some Al Qaeda-supporting nation that couldn't host hockey games at any other time.

olympic participation by the nhl has never bumped it a dime. 500 million who tune in to promptly forget it, does the nhl nor the ioc no good.

the world cup can be 10% of the olympics and the players and owners are exactly 10% ahead of what they would get tied to the five rings. with LOCAL attendance in toronto, filling the arena won't be much of a problem and espn already has the tv rights. if it goes poorly its on the league and the pa. if it goes well its the death knell for nhl participation in the olympics.

if you dont want to watch, don't. it might not be the olympics but it will be magnitudes greater than the world shampionships. near best on best has appeal, even if its unpalatable to you.

i, for one, am really looking forward to it.

Who is complaining? Neither the Europeans nor the North Americans really care one way or another what the NHL does. It has already been more or less agreed to on these boards that if the IIHF waited until the SC playoffs are over, the WHC would be played in early July, and no one really wants that. Things are fine the way they are - leave them alone.

What has the 500 million done for the NHL? Secondly, who is to say the World Cup of Hockey can not grow? Do you think the first few soccer world cups were as big as it is now?

There has been plenty of grumblings on here that the NHL should stop complaining and just shut down for the Olympics. There has also been gripes that the NHL should change their schedule so the SCF ends in time for the World Championships because that is what is done in the European leagues.

The nhl won't ( and shouldnt) change an iota to benefit the iihf and their world shampionships.

And if the IOC wants the nhl to shut down their season, the ball is in their court, or more correctly their wallet.

I'm not sure the point here... When the NHL first decided they wanted to go to the Olympics they knew full well they were scheduled in the middle of the NHL season. It's kinda funny that when it comes to the Olympics it was the league who first let the genie out of the bottle and they have been stuck fighting to get it back in ever since.

As far as the IIHF WC goes... For every person on this board who says the NHL should schedule their season around the WC there are probably 5 people who say the IIHF should schedule their tournament around the NHL... So who's really complaining?

... Secondly, who is to say the World Cup of Hockey can not grow? Do you think the first few soccer world cups were as big as it is now?

Sure... But because of the '16 format in a lot of people's opinion it isn't trending in the right direction. The tournament, in one form or another, has been around for going on 40 years and 8 editions and still hasn't been sorted out. At this point the NHL/PA hasn't even proven they are capable of organizing the thing at regular intervals... Soccer managed to figure that one out pretty early.

Grumblings? People want to watch their countries best players competing in the Olympics. This can only happen if the NHL shuts down during that timespan, as every other relevant league on this planet does as well.

Not really, no.

What people might have pointed out is, that every other league outside of NA (and not just in hockey) is able to organize its schedule with international events in mind.

All hockey leagues takes break for OG. So whats the issue...

WC is certainly problem. However both sides are pretty satisfied with current situation. Noone wants to organize it in July and NHL certainly does not want to allow their best to play in WC every year and put this championship to upper level than SC.

About OP:

European Football association (UEFA) is getting annoyed about the bribery and asshattery in the FIFA. The Quatar games are a general travesty, with dead slave-like venue builders, bribed selection voting and the crippling heat.

I think the law suit is actually UEFA forcing a non political solution to get the games out of Quatar. Not about the scheduling itself...

That's cute, lol

Who's team wont be full of nhl players? team leftover europe WILL be more talented and my guess is that team young guns would put the boots to several teams that played in sochi.

Is it true best on best? no. But its a hell of a lot closer than the world shampionships .

The city that it is going to play in, the biggest hockey market on the planet, the home team will be composed, exclusively, of NHL players. Whether we whip you under the rings or under the acc logo, means far less than you might think.

And if you dont like it dont watch. Where the nhl's bread is buttered, there are plenty of people who will.

Not sure what's being discussed here either but yeah the NHL is perfectly fine in the Winter Games, nothing says summer games quite like ice hockey.

Did you read the article?

Point is, when discussion about the 2018 games was going on, and the refusal of the NHL to agree, and the reasons they were giving. One of their reasons is the need to shut the season down for weeks. People on here were saying how soccer leagues do so for FIFA and other events and even pointed out how the leagues were adjusting their schedules for the change in the World Cup in 2022.

Well, this article points out that the soccer leagues are NOT as eager to accommodate FIFA.

The football leagues in Europe are already giving room for the Euro and World Cup qualification stages, which is about 5-6 weeks a year. To reschedule the World Cup 2018 would interfere even more with the domestic leagues fixtures. That might be one reason to why they are not as eager to accommodate.

Regarding NHL, Olympics and the World Championship:

And as stated above by others; all others leagues in the world shuts down for the OG, so... But if NHL does not want to be a part of it, that is their problem. I for sure will not be as excited if they aren't, but will most certainly watch anyway.

Have read all the replies. Most are invalid. Yes, the NHL wanted to go to Nagano. Like some have said, the exposure was supposed to be great. The EXPOSURE to 500 million people has done nothing to help the league.

When was it announced that the tourney would be in the winter? What took so long for the leagues to speak up. I heard about this months ago. But, that us exactly my point. Pro-olympic people used the soccer leagues willingness to shut down for world cup to support the idea the NHL should shut down. Said leagues cooperate with FIFA. Guess it is not the case. They "shut down" because it was done in their off-seasons.

Who cares? Those are not national teams and thus have no business being in an international tournament.

The NHL only need to shut down the league for a few weeks every four years. As the top league in the world they should be willing to do that for the sake of the international game, best-on-best competition, and fans all over the world.

Their reluctance to do so is one of the reason why I never watch a single second of NHL hockey anymore. Bunch of greedy ********.

You dont do everything just to help yourself.Do you? What about just to do it to allow objective int. competition where all the players can participate, where all the players want to be and all the fans want them to be there? Thats quite a lot and also not too much to take 14 days break once a four years....
