For the 11th straight season, the Presidents' Trophy winner will not win the Stanley Cup

This almost makes it seem going all out in the regular season is actually a detriment to your playoff performance.
Does it? 1/12 is higher than 1/16

Which specific placement has performed better? I know placing #2 in presidents trophy race has won the cup two times post-cap. 2005 to 2024. Would you bank on that instead? Dallas Stars is there this year.

Let's say, hypothetically, that the highest winrate placement in the president's trophy race is 7th, while sixth and eighth placements would perform significantly worse. Would you conclude that teams should aim to place exactly 7th so that they'd perform better in playoffs? Intentionally losing to avoid placing 6th instead of 7th?

The Presidents' Trophy winner this year did a hell of a lot better then the past couple. And honestly a couple of puck breaks a different way in the long at times pointless season any of the 5 teams behind them within 5 points could have won. Hell they didn't even have the most ROW or Regulation wins in the league. The Presidents' trophy alot of years is circumstantial. Like a division where you can feast on a few opponents for extra points to put you over the top or just being a bit more lucky in OT or shootout then teams at your level.

4 rounds of playoffs in a sport where the puck takes funny bounces…There might be something to the fact the Rangers are in a weaker division this year..a team with fewer points might make a better mid season trade or manage its LTIC players better

Since Chicago won the Cup in 2013, the Rangers were the only President's Trophy winners to make it to the Conference Finals (2015 and 2024). Nobody else made it past the 2nd round.

What position in the over all standing has a better record than 1st place has.
That's what I would like to know.

The most points in a regular season rarely gets my vote for best team. Or for most likely to win Cup.
This year was no exception.

Yup.

In my pool I picked 5 Panthers, 4 Stars, 2 Oilers.
Not a single Ranger.
And I'm in 18th place way behind leader by 29pts.
Point being lots of followers passed on President trophy winning Rangers players.

No it doesn't. The Oilers Panthers and Stars went all out . They're still in. No detriment to performance.

My top 5 teams ( before play off started)

Panthers
Oilers
Aves
Knights
Canes

Bruins, Rags, Nucks, Leafs ....good reg season teams that wouldn't stack up well for "play off hockey"

I mean, the standard of reffing changes in the post season, series need 4 wins to move on.

Playoff hockey isn't the same as regular season hockey. the team that wins during a 82 game season isn't usually the team that wins the 16 win tournament. Really, it's a different game and almost a different sport. The skills needed win one or other are vastly different.

Considering the Rangers beat the Canes and three of those teams bowed out before the conference final, good call I guess.

panthers took march and a bit of april off due to injuries and probably preventing more.
Definitely shows now

To me, the Presidents' trophy is one of those things that's nice to get, but I doubt any team is going all out just to try to win it. Usually, the focus is more on winning the division, so they have home ice at least through the first couple of rounds. And with 3 division winners and a 2 seed in the conference finals, I'm not sure I want to argue they're wrong to try to get a top seed.

It's proving that being healthy andf having the right opponent is key to winning the Cup. So far Panthers and Oilers have being two of the teams with the least amount of injuries. Canucks played well vs the Oilers all year and if Demko and Boeser are playing game 7 I think the Canucks win. In fact, if Demko was playing they might have won it in 5 or 6. If Avs are healthy they probably beat the Stars. It goes on and on.

The whole president's trophy thing is dumb. The 8th highest point total team had a whopping 5 less wins than the top team and a whopping 2 less regulation losses. The President Trophy winners also had the 7th highest goal differential in the league.

In other words, winning the President Trophy isn't a curse, it's just another seeding that has as much chance as any other seeding.

Well only one team wins.
My point was the Presidents trophy winner in no way had me believing they were the best team.

So only one team wins, but the teams you like lost due to that and the teams you don't like lost due to not being playoff teams lol

I mean this year particularly, there was no one team that was vastly superior than all other teams, and the standings showed it. I remember there was like a 4 way tie for 1st overall at one point late in the year.

I don't really care about this stat, but I guess it makes for a fancy headline.

Really though, if the playoffs are the barometer, then the regular season placement is just a dress rehearsal... who cares.

The problem with the trophy is that 1.Scheduling is itself a crapshoot (lucky component) 2.Injuries obviously play a massive role (lucky component) 3.There are almost always 3-5 teams within a very close vicinity of the champs 4.Pacing and peaking too early 5.Finally, ultimately those teams "do" win the cup, it just may take a few years for it to come to fruition (with the same core)

When you look at that list, it's all cup winners/finalists.

I think you have to remember that these teams are really close together in the final standings. In the East alone, there are 3 teams within 5 points of the Rangers in the final standings. Then if you think about all of the extra variables involved in the regular season (afternoon games, back to backs, quality of division or conference, team’s record against bottom feeders vs quality teams, etc), it starts to make a lot of sense. A lot of these playoff games are fiercely contested battles that are resolved by one goal/overtime as well as the idea of small sample (7 game series).

You beat me by 2 minutes lol.

Yup. I still remember how concerned everyone was because we couldn’t win a game lmao
I picked them to win the Cup in October on HFBOARDS.
And every month since then.
The nay sayers can look it up.
Have 5 Panthers on my 11 man pool roster .

look, unless you plan to play out all 28 games as the president trophy winners you need to win on the road anyway. It isn't that much of an advantage but one any team would like to have.

Home ice advantage is not NBA, NFL, etc... factor to help you go forward and parity between the 5th vs 8th place team can be quite something as well, giving little advantage to the ranking.

That said, isn,t the president trophy winner by far (a factor of 2 over any other finish position) the team the most likely to win the cup ?
