OT: Football thread (2024 season)

All of these guys are slam dunk HOFers, including Eli. So what is the point of these idiots dragging it out to next yeat's ballot? Are they proving a point?

Sorry this issue has stuck in my craw for a very long time, nothing anyone can say will change my mind on this. I'll have you know it's not an Eli specific thing, it's a problem I have with the process for both Football & Baseball. Shit like guys leaving dudes off their ballots entirely just to be petty, yet players like Harold Baines getting voted in. The HOFs in every sport have been tainted, IMO.

I have seen multiple former players say yes and multiple say no as well. You are making it all come down to the 2 mvp awards. That is your perogative but I believe voters look at the whole career. I do think he will get in. I just didn't think it would be this year. With more QBs eligible next year I would say its around a 40% chance he gets in next year.
 
Each year of his career he was probably a top 10 QB. Never top 5, never elite. He was good with two SB MVPs, one could have been Tuck. If you were never an elite player (Frank Gore) then you shouldn’t be a HOFer.

This is ridiculous. If you don’t think Eli should be in the HOF, fine, but he was a huge part of both playoff runs, not just the SBs. Heck, Eli even outplayed Rodgers in the playoff game the Giants lost (OBJ drop game).

Eli was able to elevate his level of play in the playoffs and that's a big reason why he was successful. In addition, the ability of Eli to stay on the field and not get injured should help his case as well.

He will get in eventually but one question the voters are asking themselves where are the playoff wins over a career outside of those 2 seasons.

The goalies from the 80's could have been "good" but they played before Patrick Roy destroyed the position and invented it over.

I'm tired of these Cowboys fans talking about Dak being better. Dak came into a league where tossing 30 and 9 is an average QB. Hurts is another one.

These guys are playing in an era where modern playbooks are removing interceptions from the meta, and every scoring play is a pass.

This is fair. One other item that I'm not sure what to make of is that Eli may have played in an era with the best QB play the league has ever witnessed.

Maybe there was another time I'm not thinking of but there were a lot of really good QBs, including all-time greats.

Brady, Peyton, Brees, Big Ben, Rivers, Ryan, Favre, Warner, Rodgers, Stafford. Even guys like Romo, Palmer and McNabb were pretty friggin good and I'm sure there are others (Schaub, Newton, Vick?).

You are right. That is a very strong group. I think the 80's/90's had some good ones as well. Eli has a solid case. It just never was a slam dunk case so he will have to wait for the right time based on who else is eligible. He compiled a lot of good stats but also holds the record for most losses ever. He has the 2 Superbowl runs but no other playoff wins in his 16 year career. His QB rating of 84 was pretty mid for his time.

Eli & Brian Leetch had very similar career arcs here in the Big Apple. Both organizations were completely dysfunctional in the second halves of their primes.

The Giants still haven't put together a competent O-Line since they won the Super Bowl in 2012.

It had very rough patches but it wasn't terrible in the second half of the season. Eli had his best season ever behind them.

In 2012 it completely fell apart beginning with the game against the Bengals & hasn't been NFL quality since. Before that game they were a good team with a chance to do some real damage yet again in the playoffs. All of a sudden the line couldn't block ANYONE. It was unreal the difference between the beginning & the end of that season.

Mark Sanchez had some nice playoff wins and runs but no one even calls him an average QB lol.

Losing in the AFC Championship game twice is not even close to winning two Super Bowls. And Eli did a lot more to win those SBs AND in the regular season than Mark Sanchez. This take is frankly embarrassing and I'm not an Eli Kool Aid drinker.
