He's not overrated because nobody rates him to begin with. And no one will disagree with you that Fleury is better. Not the fans, the coaching staff or the organization. That is why Fleury is a full time NHL'er and Folin is on waivers.
 
This summer Bergevin signed Folin and now he's on waivers.
"Good signing, No risk, just 800K, easy to bury"

He also signed Reilly for 2 years and now he's been traded.
"Good signing, No risk, easy to bury"

He also signed Kulak for 3 years and now he's a 7th D the coach doesn't want to use.
"Good signing, didn't cost too much, can't hurt the team and could be a 4D"

I was one of the very few that was mad as hell about those signing….yeah, no risk but without risk, you get nothing good either.
Yeah, they didn't hurt the team……..except by playing.

Another 4.15M thrown into the garbage (instead of getting one better 4M d-men)...but hey, they were all good signing this summer.
Bergevin got us good depth for cheap they said.

Remember that if there's another round of those useless signing next summer like Bergevin always does.

Reilly got us a 5th round pick - how is that a bad signing?

Folin, imo, is what you're going to get for an 8th D. If he clears waivers, his 800K doesn't count against the cap while he's in Laval. If he doesn't clear waivers, it means other teams see him as an NHL D. Who did you want MB to sign instead of him as 8th on the depth chart and how much less than 800k did you think this players would sign for?

As for Kulak, if Reilly got us a 5th, I think Kulak would get us more in a trade. And how is Kulak a bad #7? Again who did you want to sign instead of Kulak and for how much?

What this move really tells me is a forward or two are about to come back and there are 14 forwards management doesn't want to lose to waivers more than they don't want to lose Folin.

When Drouin, Gallagher, and Armia come back - who all skated today - if Poehling and Kovalchuk stay in the lineup, Cousins and Weal become the 13th and 14th forwards.

That's great….in the last 20 times we picked in the 5th round we got 1 player that play in the NHL: Gallagher

That's awesome, and how the Habs are doing right now?
Oh they are at the bottom of the league and Reilly was terrible in every game he played for the Habs.

You don't get the fact that playing those terrible players is a one of the reason we are now one of the worst team in the league this season. Even Bergevin finally acknowledge it by doing what he just did.

But oh boy…..we have a 5th round pick….that's worth throwing away another season

All teams are challenged to obtain cost effective D in the 5 to 8 slots. History tells us during the season the 7 and 8 slot is needed. When you have poor depth like Ottawa you are forced to pay the fifth rounder. Poor management on the part of Ottawa and good on Bergevin to exploit. Any way you look at it Folin on waivers portends a better player or at the least an internal opportunity. I don’t see an incoming trade so we will be giving an opportunity to someone in Laval. Brook is my guess.
 
The problem with sending Folin to Laval is who does he replace?

The only guy would be McEneny but so far in Laval,

Folin - 7-0-0-0 -3
McEneny - 9-2-0-2 +4

The D has been playing well so I don't know who would sit, maybe Alzner but since he's a LD but they could move Ouellet back to LD and have McEneny, Folin and Brook at RD, Ouellet, Olofsson, Leskinen at LD but Alzner has been solid in the 3rd pairing role. I wanted him benched earlier in the season but not sure I would do that for Folin although I do think Ouellet is better at LD then RD.

MAYBE this is a case of if Folin clears, then someone will trade for him? Having cleared waivers, the team acquiring him could assign him to their AHL affiliate immediately. And the Habs could receive another AHL body at the forward position.

Laval still has Lamarche for RD that hasn't played a game in a real long time also.

Not to mention Laval has had a pretty steady defensive corps the last little while with Ouellet, Olofsson, McEneny, Leskinen, Brook, and Alzner.

insert kulak and have someone play on the right side, or call someone up from the AHL. that’s usually how teams operate - carrying 7 D.

Folin was bad. It was comical at times.

imo Folin>Reilly.
 
Another example of Bergie's best ability....finding guys that can be easily buried.

Actually, you proved a point that its a good move, as not signing him was nothing in return, while a 5th, is a 5 pct chance to get a 30 goal scorer.
So it is simple 5pct is better then 0 pct.

Again, the trade MB does are actually good, the problem he is a disaster in everything else.

And if we didn't re-sign him, we wouldn't have gotten that 5th round pick back...

the problem is, it never changes. It's always the same rhetoric with Bergevin, he has no plan and just try to get cheap/hustle players who can "bounce back".

He needs to get a plan in place and stick to it for the future.
