Ranger fan here coming in peace. Don't ask me why but maybe due to fantasy hockey, I've always been a Nick Foligno fan even when he was on Buffalo as I loved the way he played the game....tough, intense and he had skills. What is going on with him this year? He has been fantastic as I'm sure you Jackets nutjobs have noticed. Do you guys think what is going on with him this year is not a fluke and he i headed towards the kind of awesome year he had two years ago when he had 70 points or so I believe or do y'all think this is just a hot streak he's on and he'll cool off and be the 40 point guy he's always been other than that great year he had in 2014-15? ......
........what ya think fellas?
I'm not a fantasy player so (other than points) I don't know what drives those decisions. But I think what you are seeing is a couple things;
1. Last season's performance (his and team) took a toll. He has said in interviews that he really used the summer to genuflect on his role as captain. He has let go of little things this season that he felt responsible for last year. That has helped his play (focus).
2. A couple years ago his daughter was born with a serious heart defect. The surgical procedure to correct it was only done in Boston and she was patient #13 in the world. She is now a happy and health 3 YO little girl and Foligino's foundation just gave $1m split between the two hospitals (Boston-Columbus). Think about how
you would feel watching your daughter grow and helping others. (The procedure is being rolled out nationally). I'm guessing your work would be better.
3. There are better players being assembled around him. Zach Werenski's play on defense has now pushed all the D-men into their appropriate slots. Jack Johnson no longer has to play that 1-2 slot. Plus the Power play now works in Columbus. Lots of points for that first group (more on that). Alex Wennberg, in his 3rd year is breaking out. They always thought his mental processor was faster than his hands and skates. Now his hands and skates are catching up.
4. The power play (currently #1 in league) uses a 1-3-1 alignment. Few,if anybody else, does that. Teams are having a devil of a time defending it, because they never see it. Werenski works the blue line and he has shown the ability to get his shot through. Wennberg works the half-wall and his micro-processor brain can see the play better than any Blue Jacket currently (or maybe previously). Foligino plays on that #1PP unit.
5. Foligino has dropped the gloves, set screens, and back checked on significant plays so far this season. His teammates notice and the beat writer has noticed. The fans (folks like you) are noticing too. Those things go a long way to this team having the 2nd fewest goals against in the league. Success breeds success. And for 16 years the CBJ have been a testament that the opposite is also true.
I could make a couple more points, but you got the idea. I have no idea what the future holds for Nick. That's why we watch sports. It was the "original" and still best "Reality TV". But I bet, barring something silly, you will see a season closer to that 65-70 points than 50-55 points.
