Yeah this thread will go no where. No easy answers as to why the team has been so painful to watch the past ten years. There is not one thing that is responsible and as always, numerous factors that have combined to play a role.
-no true #1 dman since Pronger
-no true #1 goalie since time immemorial
-no coaching staff capable of bringing out the good anger and tenacity that Lavy did. AV’s castration and punishment of any player that has shown any ounce of grit has reduced this roster to as soft as tissue paper. Just look at Fletcher’s personality and it’s clear that is what their identity is
-mediocre and overrated drafting, coupled with plain old bad luck and injuries
-no players capable of carrying a team once they did make the playoffs since Briere. Giroux is still an elite player but he’s never been “the guy” come playoffs
-a lifeless and zombie like front office and ownership that no longer cares about the team’s identity, and only the bottom line and bare minimum to keep some “real” fans in the stands

They don’t all necessarily need to be present for the team to achieve the ultimate result, or at least some respectable results. It’s a perfect storm right now in that all these elements are missing.

G & Couts are fine as leaders, not vocal, but give it all on the ice. They are the kind of veterans you want to mentor and provide an example to young players how to play the game. That makes them worth a slight overpay going forward.

I'm more than ready to move on from Voracek and JVR, it's not that they can't play hockey, they're just not good fits, they're both turning 32 next season, and aren't in this team's future. Both are big soft players who are slowing down. Both have big cap hits that can be used elsewhere. Their absence would be felt more on the PP, but how much worse can it be? I'd be happy to take a bad contract or retain money to move them and get some asset value and save $4-5M on each contract.

This team needs to get faster and especially quicker, and add forwards who play a two way game, working hard on the backcheck.
Without a couple superstars, they're only going to win with a team effort with four lines bringing it every night like the Islanders.
It's less about leadership than chemistry, Flyers need an identity, and it should be a hybrid of Vegas and the Islanders - fast team that has a ferocious forecheck and consistently back checks and wears you down instead of going for the quick kill.

Remember when we traded Richards and Carter, who were bums incapable of winning, and freed Briere, Pronger, Timonen, and Bryzgalov to finally win us a Cup?

It worked so well. Since the problem was definitely their leadership and not the dude building dumb teams.
They only won because Dustin Brown carried them to a Cup.

Also no true captain since pronger (a captain who would smash his stick over your head if he saw you dropping off).....its also easy for a goalie to fall off a mental cliff when the team in front of him blows.......Steve Mason and Bob had a little different experience after they left.

Get a new coach, get a new GM, get a new goalie......except all that actually happened multiple times
So you would like to keep the coach that runs a system that only works when the home run pass connects or the opposing team doesn't send a guy to stand unguarded in front of the net. Or keep the GM that has done nothing but trade 2 scrubs and sign a fringe player for 5 years. Go trade for another super star veteran goalie who will save this almighty system all the while shattering any confidence in the best goalie prospect we have had in a long time. Seems right. *eye roll*

We are definitely just an angry yeller away from fixing the legion of management and coaching and scouting and player development issues that have existed in the rotting heart of this team since long before Snider died and the old team personality died with him.

If we had someone like Pronger, Fletch definitely wouldn't put ECHL level guys like Prosser and Stewart onto an NHL roster for absolutely no reason.

Wait a second, the Kings haven't won a Cup since Brown got the C stripped and gave it to Kopitar...maybe this guy is on to something.

Maybe we just need a dumb guy who cant use a waterbottle but can be stripped from C, and then magic will happen (and the guy will ironically be used as an epitome of leadership)
