So we got less in return for retention than another team?

I sense a theme....
Devils pick was in 2026. If that’s who you are talking about this is basic “GMing” in every league essentially. The further away you are from the present the value of the pick depreciates. 2024 5th rounder is basically the same value as a 2026 4th rounder.

If the Flyers make another trade where they retain salary (Johansen, Laughton), they can’t do another until July 1, which means they can’t trade Risto for anything at this draft unless they can move the full number.

This is where the debate going back to the offseason plays in where they were trying to do a retained salary trade on TDA, and why it made more sense to buy him out. League saved the Flyers from themselves on that one. It’s why they should’ve bought out Hayes, too.

No complaints here.

Laughton is an off-season trade. You have to also think Briere may be hoping Johansen can turn things around and be flipped next year for something.

Still don't think anyone wants Risto, especially since he can't stay healthy right now.

Laughton is an offseason trade until they decide at the draft that no one can meet the price and decide it’s a trade deadline move. Again.

Remember your post earlier today about the Flyers sending mixed signals about drafts and which years they actually want picks?

I would assume their scouts put together some type of tier list. It’s quite possible that draft A has 25 players at or above tier 3, whereas draft B only has 15. So you’d prefer a 1st in draft A. But, draft B could have more players at/above tier 6, so you’d prefer a mid/late round pick in that draft. No different than how certain drafts are great for defenseman but weak at center, etc.

There’s also a decent likelihood Danny just saw an opportunity to get an asset back for space that was otherwise going to go un-utilized and didn’t want to look a gift horse in the mouth.

If Danny does in fact prefer a future draft to 2024, I feel like it’s a safe bet he could turn that 2024 5th into a 2026 4th++ and beat the asset the Devils got back for their retention.

Forget everything I ever said. Raise the Danny B statue.

Naw but that's the stuff we want to see. Swoop in and collect assets. Don't be out here throwing in 5ths. Rebuilding teams don't throw in value.

By the way, this is a rebuilding move. By the way #2, how much money are the Flyers brokering? Interesting to see how it compares elsewhere and if they once again bled some value
