I'll note that they did trade for Ristolainen and completely reinvent his game. He's significantly better now than he was when he played for Buffalo. Combine that with Tocchett as HC, I could absolutely see the Flyers turning Nurse into a gem.
People will laugh and say "haha the Flyers are thinking about trading for a shitty Nurse", but as another team in the Metro, I'm a bit concerned with this.
They completely revitalized Ristolainen into a terrific 2nd pair DFD. Would it really be that surprising for them to do that with Nurse too?

For that kind of retention, the return would need to be pretty huge. Nurse would have a lot of value at 4.6 and change.

Oilers threaten to hire Babcock, Nurse finally decides thats enough to agree to a trade out of Edmonton. Nurse is traded, Oilers don't hire Babcock. Only acceptable way for this to be going down!
I mean, kinda. Nurse has had more coaches and defensive coaches than defencemen ten years older than him. He’s played on some great teams with all the incentive in the world to take that next step, but just seems to be taking steps backwards. Maybe he’s in his head, maybe a change will coax a difference, but maybe he just is what he is and they’ll be stuck with a 9.5 million bottom four defender.
Conversely, Nurse has played a lot of minutes on those great teams.
Nurse is overpaid significantly. But he plays a lot of tough minutes and has spent most of his career with shitty D partners. It’s not a coincidence that when the Oilers acquired Murphy Nurses game improved.
Jake Walman is the overpriced LHD the Oilers should be desperate to deal. But he’s the new shiny toy still.

Nurse probably is a 7to 7.5 million dollar guy. It wouldn't surprise me if he looks better with the Flyers.
As a Pens fan I would take Nurse on and I think he'd get us that value.

Completely agree. I’m not actually a Nurse hater, and now that the hour seems to be coming close, am actually dreading losing him and his minute munching. I have no idea how the Oilers plan to fill that hole.

Cap hit aside (which the Flyers can absorb), Nurse could be a good fit. He wouldn't be relied upon to be the top guy or anything like that either.
If you don't have an elite top 4, then you wan't depth where you can say your #5 is a luxury piece on the 3rd pairing. If they added Nurse on top of what they have, you could say that.
