Flyers fire John Tortorella, name Brad Shaw interim head coach

Mind games ?

"Michkov, you need to play a minimal amount of defense, at least just stay above the defenseman in your own zone when they have the puck".

Michkov blowing the zone/floating behind the defense, Flyers get scored on, gets benched.

"These mind games are the problem"- Winston Wolf

There no mind games. Most players will say he is direct with what he wants. Players say you can discuss strategy with him. Even Dubois had good thing to say about him when Dubois was in Winnipeg.

Torts takes on hard jobs with teams that have zero structure and garbage culture like the Flyers and BJs. He's not a miracle worker.
Who said anything about Michkov?

Go read up on what happened last year with Couturier and the fall out because of it. Or how he demanded Sanheim be traded before his NMC kicked in, but that was only unsuccessful because Torey Krug used his own NMC. Both were pointless dramas all started by Tortorella and his ego.

You are absolutely clueless.

Good coach, but probably time to retire. Has a very rigid idea of how the game should be played and isn't capable of adapting or maximizing the strengths of a roster that differs from his ideal. Though to be fair, it was a bad fit from the start and he didn't have much talent to work with.

This is the culture that Tortorella wants and thrives on. Screaming matches and physically challenging him to a duel get him rock hard. If you think this is "culture" in 2025 or is in anyway sustainable for any team, let alone a rebuilding team, your opinion is not shared by the majority of NHL players or anyone with an IQ above room temperature.

On the one hand, he was never going to keep being the coach after those comments. On the other hand:

Yeah. No other team has had a season-long team save percentage of <.880 since the expansion teams in the late 90s. It's staggeringly bad, and the worst thing is that with a goaltending trio of Ersson (which is a stupid name, cause no one is named Er), Fedotov (who is literally JUST large), and Kolosov (who is somehow even worse than Ersson and Fedotov), it's not even surprising.

It's like the Flyers decided to just lean into their reputation as a goaltending graveyard, and show everyone how bad it could be.

Show me a Jack Adams winning coach, and I'll show you a great goaltending season. This is the inverse of that.
Completely unrelated, can you explain what the deal is with Eriksson Ek? What is that even about?

Trotz is a beer league coach whose success came on the back of his goalies. Kind of crazy to excuse him with the zero structure when he had 3 years to work on it. Yet his team made zero progress and is on the verge of having the worst power play for the third straight year...
Dude Trotz had the Islanders playing like their zone was a fortress. They have the same goalie and now they just play average D and can't score.

There is a some kind of obsession with Carle as a potential new Flyers coach
Can’t share this tbh
Carle has/had TOP rosters by junior hockey standards. Especially US national team. There was a huge gap between them and others.
Potential job with Flyers has nothing to do with what he did before

But if Briere decides to dive for McKenna - well, I’m ok with Carle, it will be “nothing have to lose” scenario

Torts is rumored to be joining the Isles as an Assistant Coach. Here's a spy photo of him at a meeting this morning with Patrick Roy on LI. Formal announcement is imminent.

This is really interesting coming from a Jackets fan. Especially considering he took a heavily underdog Blue Jackets team in 2019 and swept the Tampa Bay Lightning in what was a major upset and dominant performance. This was right before the lighting went on to win 2 consecutive cups.
So are you saying that CBJ showed in the playoffs that they should have finished much higher in standings that year?

Used to be a good coach would probably be more accurate.

Can't wait to see how much better this rage tag group will be next year.

Doug Mclean said on Real Kyper and Bourne that the next flyers coach will either be Tocchet or Quinville.

In fact he says there's something wrong if Tocchet doesn't get the job

Tortorella fans in a nutshell:

When a Tortorella coached team plays good and succeeds it's because he's such an amazing coach.

When a Tortorella coached team sucks it's because the players all just suck. Nothing to do with Tortorella or his coaching.

I've seen many of these Tortorella kind of coaches over the years. It seems to always go the same exact way time after time. The hot head yelling coach comes in and gets the players fired up in the beginning and gets them playing well. After 2-3 years the players start to tune the coach out though, because they become so used to the constant yelling, that it's just another Tuesday to them. A coach needs to have more than one gear and also needs to realize that not all of his players will respond to the same exact coaching style.

I actually do like Tortorella, I find him extremely funny when watching from a distance. I would not be a good fit for his coaching style though.

There's something wrong with the Flyers if they hire either of those guys. I mean, there's something wrong with them already, but that decision would be evidence that it's terminal.

Seems to be a trend of people referring to "Torts" as "Trotz" online and creating confusion like this. No one cares about the blue and orange team or their no-neck ex-coach.

Yeah but David Carle would probably be a big boost for the Flyers' REAL franchise player, Bobby Brink.

Tocchet is under contract with Van (Team option) for another year.

Dinosaur thinking that the smart Flyers fans hope to God they finally stop following. Q would finally kill any scraps of goodwill the front office has left.

Didn't think anyone would give Randy Carlyle another chance.
