Flyers fire John Tortorella, name Brad Shaw interim head coach

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

I don’t get the timing of this at all

He just got done very publicly implying he didn't want to be the coach anymore. It's hard not to pull the plug under those circumstances.

Also, the Flyers making a move that the Authentics would get mad about on Opening Day, when a lot of people will be distracted by baseball, makes sense to me.

Where to begin with John Tortorella?

If he had never won a cup in Tampa, he would not have gotten these many chances. I am a Ranger fan, saw his act up close and I think he's trash. He doesn't do the X/O work and when any media person calls him out, he just acts like a douche and never is held accountable.

That said, I am terrified that the Rangers are going to fire Laviolette and give the keys to Torts again.

The problem lies in the fact that the Torts model is short sighted and unsustainable.

He values hustle and hard work more than skill or creativity. Everyone can name players who are or would be great "Torts guys" and even more who are not.

So because this is how he is, he attracts guys who are lunch pail guys. Because he winds up with a room full of lunch pail guys, they have to be even more lunch pail to stand out.

A team cannot play 82 games of balls to the wall "Torts Hockey" and not have it take a toll. Torts rides his guys like a getaway car, and everyone wonders why it's not ready to race come the post season. Maybe its because he's been beating the shit out of it all season and it gets to the line looking like its ready for a demolition derby.

The last few seasons they do the same thing, they come out of the gate well, then the injuries add up and they hit March/April with the wheels falling off.

The prototype Torts team would have:
A Superstar Goalie with a backup who doesn't mind sitting for a month at a time.

A Bonafide #1 dman and 5 interchangeable guys who would be 3s-4s on a decent team. Grizzly veteran guys. NO room for developing talent on the back end.

A real first line that has 2 skill guys and one who "brings alot of jam"

9 interchangeable guys who are in reality third liners but can play up on a second line or down on a fourth, depending on who is in the doghouse this week.

A team psychologist who can keep this group from killing that weasel.

I am now even more scared he's coming back to NY. What do you guys think we can get for Lafreniere?

Time to gloat, yea saying shit like this means you're done instantly. I doubt he gets another gig in the NHL.

He can still coach..............Underlying stats and metrics are quite serviceable....Horrible goaltending numbers and a middling roster is what did them in....

Fortunately for them they're bottoming out now and they need a few years of that so they can stop middling.....

He pretty much asked for it with what he said in his last interveiw. He is pretty much done coaching. He basically quit. I never thought he would do that.

I'd love to see 77 year-old Johnny Torts trying to hold a postgame press conference in Montreal.
My French is terrible (I haven't even tried since I was in, like, fourth grade) so I had to resort to some online translation as a guide, but I suspect he'd just memorize one phrase and repeat it every time someone asks him to answer en Francais: "C'est de la merde; citez-moi la-dessus."

On the one hand, he was never going to keep being the coach after those comments. On the other hand:

Yeah. No other team has had a season-long team save percentage of <.880 since the expansion teams in the late 90s. It's staggeringly bad, and the worst thing is that with a goaltending trio of Ersson (which is a stupid name, cause no one is named Er), Fedotov (who is literally JUST large), and Kolosov (who is somehow even worse than Ersson and Fedotov), it's not even surprising.

It's like the Flyers decided to just lean into their reputation as a goaltending graveyard, and show everyone how bad it could be.

Show me a Jack Adams winning coach, and I'll show you a great goaltending season. This is the inverse of that.
