Florida Panthers set the record for most points while missing the playoffs

With 96 points, the Florida Panthers have broken the previous record of 95 for most points on a team that missed the playoffs.
Prior to this season, Florida's 96 points, which were not enough to qualify them for the playoffs, would have been tied for the highest regular season point output in franchise history for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
These 96 points are 2 more than last year's Clarence Campbell Trophy winning Nashville Predators finished with.

Umm....what?

This is because of the shootout that started in the 2005/06 season, point totals can no longer be compared because of this change. I remember when 80 points got you in the playoffs, with overtime, shootouts and loser points more points are awarded per game, therfore more points are needed to make the playoffs.

They are not a deep enough team yet. They went on an insane run but as soon as Barkov cooled off they starting treading water again. Any team who lives and dies based off their best player will never do any damage. Had they not made those bizarre expansion moves they likely have the depth to win more games, having them in a wildcard spot. It would have also made a playoff series more realistic to win then if they made it now.

Looking at the team my thoughts are they need better depth and they need to figure out their goaltending. Reimer is not a starter you can rely on as much as that pains me to say because he's a great guy who is easy to cheer for, and Luu is ancient and can't be relied on for a starters work load.

Figure out goalies and get another top 6 winger and some better depth, that's a solid team.

It's a shame what's happened with Florida in the last 1.5 years. When they won the division it wasn't a fluke other than the rest of the division underachieving, but the Panthers playing well was real. They created a culture of higher standards in that locker room and it's still showed the last couple years. Last season they were in a playoff position like 3 weeks before the end of the season after having some significant injuries and veterans playing poorly. This year they miss by a point after losing both Smith and Marchessault in the expansion draft and having to learn new system with a new coach.

Despite missing the playoffs 2 years in a row now that team is still in healthy place. Players are doing their part and busting their asses off. The young guys are leading. You can't ask for much more than that. It's up to the management and owner to help the guys now.

Every year a generational talent is available at the top of the draft, these records will get tested.

The lower half of the Atlantic division completely gave up at the trade deadline.
lol generational talent every year...:huh::huh:o_O

Could have worded it better but you aren’t comprehending properly what I meant.

Every year that a generational talent is available, teams will tank thus making above average teams get more points. Especially if it happens like it did in the Atlantic. Half the teams tanked.

Which is good and bad. If you miss the playoffs you want to be picking 1 not 15. But maybe the lotto will equalize that situation.

Awww ur too cute, following all the Panthers threads. Gonna be sweet when the Devils get swept by the Lightning.

Remind me who's FLA playing?

Close only works in horse shoes and hand grenades, not the NHL .

If only the Rags could have showed up vs Philly or your team didn't lose to Ottawa at home, oh well.

For the record I gave your team props all season long in the NJD board and hoped they got in over Philly.

The poster you replied to is an outlier of sorts of the Devils board as well.
