At least with 14 runners, even a chalk exacta pays out a little bit

  • Steve Asmussen, and his massive stable, is just 22 1-3-2 this month. Looking at his stable on major race days and Saturdays is almost a requirement as the winningest conditioner in history.
Belmont at Big A (New York):
  • Eric Cancel rode three winners.
  • Race 3: Royalty Interest (Eric Cancel/Chad Brown) was the longest shot on the board yet won the $200,000 Grade 3 Sheepshead Bay Stakes.
  • Race 8: Messier (Jose Gomez/Richie Dutrow) won the Grade 3 $175,000 Westchester Stakes. Post Time (Sheldon Russell/Brittany Russell) placed and now has a lifetime mark of 10 8-1-1.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Attendance: 107,236.
  • Handle: Roughly $75 million. Churchill usually doesn't release precise figures through Equibase. UPDATE: A new record at $73 million.

  • Card: 13 races of which each was $100,000+ and two $1 million or more. The card had seven graded stakes which included a pair of Grade 1, three Grade 2 and two Grade 3.
  • Brad Cox trained three winners including both Grade 1 races.
  • Flavien Prat (10 1-0-0) and Tyler Gaffalione (12 1-1-2) rode the final two winners. The duo, among America's many elite riders, had zero victories combined heading into the 12th race.
  • Race 1: Sundance Feature (Luis Saez/Tom Drury) won a $120,000 MSW by more than 12 lengths. The 3-year-old daughter to Speightstown was out for the second time.
  • Race 5: Idiomatic (Florent Geroux/Cox) won the Grade 1 $1 million La Troienne Stakes.

  • Race 6: Ova Charged (Florent Geroux/Shane Wilson) won a 3-way humdinger to win the Grade 3 $400,000 Unbridled Sidney Stakes.

  • Race 9: The $1 Super High Five paid over $272,000. If your numbers are 11-1-6-9-8, go collect it is the whole pool!
  • Race 11: Thorpedo Anna (Brian Hernandez. Jr./Kenny McPeek) won the Grade 1 $1.5 million 150th Kentucky Oaks. She opened it up in the stretch to win by more than four lengths. Anna is 5 4-1-0 lifetime.

Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Handle: $7.1 million.
  • Race 11: The $.50 Pick 5 returned more than $71,000.
  • Race 10: One of the most staggering payouts of the year: The $.10 super returned more than $15,000. There was $95,000 in the pool which means multiple winners somehow had 37-to-1, 19-1, 18-1 and 24-1.
  • Race 6: A 74-to-1 shot placed while the even-money favorite finished well behind the field.

  • Kentucky Derby (Saturday) broadcast information is posted below. That is in addition to the traditional methods on FanDuel (TVG) and through simulcast parlors.
  • Saturday's card is posted below.

Much is made about post positions in Kentucky Derby history but some of that data is misleading. There are higher numbers that have not been established as much as inside posts. Sierra Leone (2) and Fierceness (17) are vying for race-time favorite status yet are in historically bad posts.
  • Number 1: Ferdinand in 1986 will be mentioned as the most recent #1 winner.
  • Number 2: Often overlooked is the #2 has not produced a winner since Affirmed -- arguably the greatest Florida-bred of them all -- in 1978.
  • Number 5: The winningest post with 10 wins.
  • Number 6: The abysmal plight of #6 (2 wins in 94 starts).
  • Number 9: 4 wins in 90 starts has been dormant from the winner's circle since Riva Ridge in 1972.
  • Number 17: This year's favorite is entering from the #17 which is the only number not to win (44 starts) from 1 through 20.

Is it just me or does the Kentucky Derby seem to happen later and later each year. Just saw the post time for today's race and I could swear it started an hour earlier 3 years ago. I hope this race doesn't become a night race. It should happen still in the middle of the day.

Unless rain is the reason for the late start.

TV like the Oaks yesterday is the reasoning... USA had the traditional NBC Sports racing crew until the Oaks coverage in the 5 pm timeslot.... that's when Tirico WAS ADDED TO THE new set @ Churchill.... it's also why you're seeing split coverage today w/ USA going to 2:30 THEN NBC takes it through the Derby.... same likely w/ the Preakness and the Belmont in June , which Fox.... it has always been in the 6 pm timeslot.

It is run on the first saturday every May.

Oh you are talking about the race time.

It's mostly been 7 pm every time I've followed.
