Buffalo got tunnel vision for Krebs. Same as the Sens did for Brannstrom. The ask was higher for us because the Sabres really coveted Krebs

The Sens asked for Andersson+Valimaki+1st for Stone

And Tkachuk+Mangiapane for Eichel while we were offering Mangiapane+two non-Tkachuk assets I think.

The Sabres also wanted to restore credibility to their team by getting a hometown guy so when Krebs shook loose with Tuch it was a nobrainer for them.

Calgary
Hard to say. We'll probably never know for sure. I heard they were both big packages and Treliving when asked by the Sabres would not include Tkachuk so they went with the one with the guy from upstate New York. But it was a while ago now and I dunno where that even came from.

All I'll say is that is the exact center you should sell the farm for if made available and you don't have one. If another comes on the market like that Conroy should consider nothing from this organization's stables untouchable.

And the latter part of your post highlights the crux of the problem - those deals come around maybe once or twice a generation. Before eichel it was Joe Thornton who was the big centre in his prime available…. In 2006.

The flames are (probably) going to have to draft that centre. I’ll say this, once Kadri and backlund age out, the team will probably be shit enough to be in that position.

Seeing Kuz walking into the hallway off the bench . . . Seriously dude, where is the even shitty scoring pace

Shari not scoring

Our offense is woeful

But I do see them purposefully protecting Dustin. They stick in Dan for the 2nd of a back2back against Vegas, Wolf got Sharks. It's not too hard to see that this is a pattern of what's going on. And not that I hate it. I'm just hoping DW can take over the reins full time at some point and not disappoint having been really eased into his gig. I only saw the 3rd but to see we were down by 1 only shows Vlad's not the worst goalie in the world.
The problem with this approach (giving easier games to Wolf) is diminishing trading value for Vladar but who cares if it's a 4th or 5th... not getting anything higher than that for him, the goalie market is also dead...

I… don’t think that was quite it from the retrospective that I’ve heard.

Buffalo chose the Vegas package over ours, and for good reason too. If Tkachuk was skiddish about his future in Calgary, why would he re-sign in Buffalo of all places? He had one year till ufa status and Vegas offered Buffalo pieces that were good and had control certainty. Tkachuk might’ve been a better price than anything Buffalo got on its own, but so what if he decides to f*** off?

My interpretation is we simple got beat.
I've heard it the same way.

It was Tuch they were enamored with. Upstate NY kid that was a Sabres fan and had produced will for VGK signed for 5 more years on a sub-5m AAV

That was the after-the-fact excuse from Treliving and co. when they failed. That and the whole Stone was only ever going to sign in Vegas propaganda

“I think if Calgary got him there, the Flames loved their chances of it (signing Stone long-term) eventually occurring. But word is Ottawa’s ask included Juuso Valimaki, and for the second year in a row Calgary rejected anyone’s attempts to pry loose the Finnish defenceman.”

Long story short, after quote unquote winning the Hamonic sweepstakes only for it to blow up in his face, Treliving got gun shy. Tragic, cursed luck really - landing Stone and Eichel while keeping Gaudreau, Andersson and maybe Tkachuk would have made the Flames a powerhouse of the same calibre as Vegas or Florida.

I never saw Mark Stone as a missed opportunity.

We were chasing a RW for Gaudreau when Tkachuk was under our nose the entire time. But he was stapled to Backlund in a shutdown role. And if the team was smart enough to use Bennett as a center, they would have emerged as a true, regular contender before 2022.

Do you have any faith that the Flames medical staff would know how to handle Stone’s injury problems? I don’t, based on what they let Monahan do.

The real miss was Eichel. Tkachuk had previously wanted out during the Covid season. Gaudreau-Eichel is the best duo the Flames would have ever had.
