Flames vs. Refs?

How is Calgary getting too many missed calls? This has been going on since their first Ottawa game where the Sens were given more power plays than they deserved.

What did Calgary do to deserve such treatement? It's not 2016 anymore. They don't employ Dennis Wideman anymore. The players on the team are okay (Kadri hasn't been as edgy as he once was in Toronto and Colorado) and Calgary will open up a new arena in 2027 (I remembered certain fans claiming one of the reasons the Flames got harsh calls in the mid 2010's was because they can't get a sensible arena deal done...).

It doesn't make sense.

Sens deserved more PP time tonight. the calls flames got were pretty weak. Brady literally got mutilated tonight.

Reffing has been atrocious this year. Canucks vs Utah last night, I didn't think Any penalty for Either team were actual penalties. Refs are ruining the sport altogether with their need for attention. Put the whistles away and let them play.

It wasn't "distinct" and that word is doing more heavy lifting than heavy machinery in that BS review. Anyone who has played hockey at a high level knows what was going on with that play. But calling it a good goal makes people feel better about themselves if they're not Senators fans.

At what point is a kick "distinct" and "non-distinct"? Is it measured by angles or distance etc? Just wondering.

So here is the rule for you:

37.4 Distinct Kicking Motion – Plays that involve a puck entering the net as a direct result of a “distinct kicking motion” shall be ruled NOGOAL. A “distinct kicking motion,” for purposes of Video Review, is one where the video makes clear that an attacking Player has deliberately propelled the puck with a kick of his foot or skate and the puck subsequently enters the net. A goal cannot be scored on a play where an attacking Player propels the puck with his skate into the net (even by means of a subsequent deflection off of another Player)using a “distinct kicking motion.” A goal also cannot be scored on a play where an attacking Player kicks any equipment (stick, glove, helmet, etc.) at the puck, including kicking the blade of his own stick, causing the puck to cross the goal line. A puck that deflects into the net off an attacking Player’s skate who does not use a “distinct kicking SECTION 5 – OFFICIALS NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE OFFICIAL RULES 2023-202463 motion” shall be ruled a GOAL. A puck that is directed into the net by an attacking Players’ skate shall also be ruled a GOAL, as longas no “distinct kicking motion” is evident. (See also Rule 49.2)

I mean it is actually easy to look at Canadian teams and penalties. The data is on NHL.com.

Going from memory, in the playoffs the 7 Canadian teams are all like top ten in worst penalty differential over the last 20 years.

I'm not a conspiracy guy, but that stat makes you wonder wtf is causing that.

I've seen skates leave the ice while stopping. Ottawa has scored goals where that has happened. Calgary has, every team has. That was a kick and not a stopping motion. It is what it is. The referees aren't always going to get it right, the people reviewing have different standards each night.

I'm sure Calgary has been screwed on kicking motions that the people in Toronto decided wasn't "distinct" enough for their liking.
