TJ Brodie has improving by leaps and bounds in the last few years. It's no secret he and Mark Giordano form one of the top pairings in the NHL and while the Flames Captain is putting together a Norris calibre campaign Brodie has quietly been increasing his lead among NHL defenders in +/-

Watching him game in and game out has been a real treat and he's definitely emerged as a top pairing D at the tender age of 24. Such a great skater, makes great decisions and is adept at both ends of the rink.

He's playing 25+ mins a night and is on pace for 12g 38a and 48pts all while being north of +30.

A real gem for a 4th round pick.

"You know like wadda guy." -Bob Hartley

It's been awesome watching his development. He still has some turnover issues that he can work on, but his skating, his positional awareness and his ability to defend has grown leaps and bounds.

You need to take +/- with a grain of salt, but when Schultz finished with +/- with 50 it was players like Poti who were given the more defensive tasks. Schultz started in the offensive zone more-often-than-not and was given the weaker assignments.

Brodie plays against the top lines night in and night out and leaves the offensive zone starts to the Wideman and Russell pairing. He didn't have it anywhere close as easy as Schultz. Just being able to look decent in the task he's been assigned this year is an accomplishment, somehow outscoring the otherside by a fair-margin is impressive.

Brodie has been playing like a lite version of Scott Niedermayer this season. He has been unbelievable for the Flames this season.

I said Baertschi would be better than Kadri

A thread about a great young player is starting to turn into a humbleness thread.

What is happening...this is like the hfboards version of pigs flying.

For what it's worth I said I didn't want to trade Gardiner for Monahan during the summer he was drafted (runs and hides in shame...)

Good young defeneman getting better, leading the league in +/- playing 25 mins a night is noteworthy whether it interests you or not. And if not, easy to not click on it.

I remember a poll years ago on CP that asked who would be better in the coming years:

Brodie
Erixon

Pretty sure Erixon won by a landslide.

Great to see Brodes get some recognition. He's such a humble and quiet guy, it makes me happy to see people talk about how he's playing. I truly believe he's every bit as good as Josi.

I actually think his +/- stat is below where it should be, and it's the one area he needs to improve upon.

Bob Hartley needs to start coaching players to win +/- battles along the ice surface.

Well, it's not like he hasn't been. The last few years, our players have piled up a lot of negative +/-s game in and game out, and it resulted in allowing way more goals than we scored. This year, a lot of our players have significantly increased their +/-s per game, and it's resulted in outscoring our opposition much more often.
