The Habs rebuild is sorta just bad timing. Slafkovsky will end up a great player but not someone you would hope for at 1st overall. The rest of the pieces are good but I don't see them being good enough to win a cup with the core they are putting together.

But who knows, maybe it works out for them. I wouldn't bet on them though.

Marty a well earned demotion, just go out there and hit stuff for a week or two kid.
Wolf v Caufield could be interesting, both off to pretty good starts this season.
We'll see how Hubes and Mantha perform at the Bell Centre, our record there has stunk the last decade it feels like.

The Habs much like the Flames haven't had a franchise 200ft C since the mid 90s. I don't much care for their team or their fans but knowing that feel I hope both teams can grab one in the upcoming draft. Otherwise I think you're just destined to be an also ran.

Edmonton and Buffalo ran into a similar problem, and ultimately it is the single biggest issue with the approach. The formula working relies upon getting not just a first overall pick, but a generational one. If not for McDavid, Edmonton never would've pulled out of the basement.

If you don't have that luck, you ultimately need to be very good with drafting/development and asset management and still be patient and wait for several years, which is the stuff you are trying to circumvent by tanking in the first place.

I don't think you need to grab a generational guy in order for it to work but they have to be clear cut superstars or high potential ones. Edmonton needed McDavid because their front office and ownership are idiots. Buffalo also seems to have an ownership problem that holds their team back.

I think SJ and Anaheim are set up to be very dangerous in the near future with their young guys and none of them are generational talents. Tanking only solves the talent acquisition problem and you can still come out in a great position without getting 1st overall but development, timing and asset management are the other key components. I've always supported tanking because I understood it was only the first step and you're going to fall to the bottom anyway if your not careful so might as well control the fall so you can set up the rise.

A good reminder how the full rebuilds can literally pause a franchise for half a decade.
...and they're still terrible. Using a top 5 (or 6 what ever it was) on Reinbacher was also a reach. Yeah you need d-men, but Michkov is right there you dolts. When do people actually see Montreal taking off, they got their first overall player, they got Demidov, they were able to hit on Caufield, they hit on Hutson and have Suzuki but they're still a rubbish team. They're second line is Jake Evans and Alex Newhook for crying out loud LOL

The Flames are lucky in that they at least have a stud goalie who can be part of our foundation for 10+ years and I think our defensive prospects are better than most in the NHL. Whereas some of these teams need like 5+ drafts to be even mildly competitive; Ducks have been drafting high for years, have multiple top 3 picks on forwards (Carlsson and McTavish on the roster, Senneke as a prospect), traded for Cutter Gauthier and still can't score to save their lives, they barely average over 2 goals a game.

Meanwhile Flames depth gave us two 30 goal guys last year in Coleman and Gogovich. You need the top picks to get your star players, but without depth you're just another Buffalo or Edmonton pre-McDavid, useless teams with no depth. That's why Conroy isn't selling the entire team for picks, it takes years to get that depth back. Chicago tried this off-season by signing a bunch of guys, they're still awful.

I'm going to be missing this one due to the need to focus in on some studies for a few days.

Go Flames, win a game.

Have fun everyone!

*edit - Coke all the way. It's like the brands flipped in 2007. Coke was always too sweet and flat, Pepsi had some bite. Now they're the opposite and Coke has fizz and isn't as syrupy sweet as Pepsi. So weird.

Montreal fans should be embarrassed by their start this year. They have no reason to be where they are yet again. I still feel they will finish the season with more points than us.

As far as cola, I'm one of those guys that doesn't feel strong 1 way or the other. Blondes & brunettes.

Montreal has a bottom 3 goaltending tandem in the league. Analyze their drafting all you want, they’re right where they’re supposed to be
