Confirmed Trade: [FLA/WPG] Kaapo Kahkonen for Chris Driedger

Funny trade, two contenders swap depth goalies. Florida thinks Kähkönen is better, Winnipeg thinks Driedger is better.

The Jets aren’t shopping Comrie; he’s been playing well and he gets along well with Helle.

This is a preference of Driedger over Kahkonen as the third stringer, for whatever reason. Given that we got Kahk back on waivers, I really don’t get it.

sounds like a favor done for each player
This is exactly what it feels like. Driedger probably thought for a fleeting second that he would get second chair in FLA after Knight was traded. That didn't happen so they shipped him somewhere else as a favor for past accomplishments.

Shocked to find out he's a Finn. I always thought Karpo Karkonen was from Boston.
Are you talking about Hannu Karpo?

Kähkönen is not bad but his career has been going down lately. Hopefully he can turn it around. Driedger has been bad since that knee injury.

Didnt actually check their cap hits because I assumed both are close to league minimum.
It's not as big of a difference as I thought: CD is .795M, while KK is 1M. I initially thought CD was on a two way deal.

So likely a fit thing more than Winnipeg saving a few bucks

Why though?

Possible that Kahkonen's agent was pushing for a chance for him to play somewhere else. Some real cash savings (prorated 205K for the remainder of the season) going from Kahkonen to Driedger.

We'll see if Florida carries three goalies by the end of the season. I remember Columbus getting Keith Kinkaid from the Devils and he never officially played for them. But basically he was there so Sergei Bobrovsky could take some days off in practice / not have to dress as a backup.
