Saves real money, gets some AHL depth for two years who has a slim chance of turning into something useful, opens up a spot for Askarov once he's healthy.
I also think it's a small indication that Grier isn't just amassing picks. A 4th round pick turning into this guy is probably a common outcome, but it would take 6 more years to get this guy out of it. We don't need a 4th round pick outcome in 6 years, so get a player now that can help the AHL squad as depth.

Seems like San Jose effectively selling Vanicek for cash.

I doubt there would be a market for him without retention. Florida has the cap space to add his full cap hit. San Jose doesn't have to pay his remaining salary.

I don't know anything about Giles but my hockeyDB scouting tells me he is a warm body. Probably a good solid pro. 6'5", you can't teach size. But he is an AHL player, which would make him fit in perfectly on the Sharks NHL roster.

Even if Vanicek is not an upgraded on Driedger, it doesn't hurt to add more goalie depth since Driedger is waiver exempt. It's basically an insurance policy.

That to me would have been one option better than Vanecek. Forsberg in Ottawa could have been another. Both come cheaper cap hit wise, and to me are better goalies to backup than Vanecek. I guess Panthers got Vanecek because he didn't require a draft pick of any sort in return, and with Giles it took $775k off Vanecek's cap hit.
