So Sturm, vanacek, 2027 7th for Giles and a 4th. Seems pretty meh for everybody involved

Meh. Waste of a deal. I’d have rather kept him for another season or so. Maybe he’ll come back in the offseason.

Nico was a good soldier during the worst years of the rebuild and deserves a chance to get another ring. Godspeed.

That's a bit more than I was expecting for Sturm. His ATOI has dropped a full five minutes since last season, he keeps getting hurt, and he's been passed on the PK depth chart by Dellandrea and Graf.
The only thing he does well is win faceoffs. That's nice, but I don't think he's a big loss.

He wasn't bringing a huge amount to the table other than faceoffs and a winning attitude, but I like the guy and I'm sorry to see him go.
I'm pretty sure Sturm said he'd be open to coming back even after a trade so getting something for him and revisiting him in the offseason makes the most sense. Just because it may be a "we can't just let them walk for nothing, can we?" sort of deal doesn't mean it's not the correct path to take. We can still get that extra season or two out of Sturm. This gives him a chance to win another Cup too so it should generate good will here.

I get why it was done, just seems more like Grier is making deals for the players being traded than anything, which is fine. Nico deserves another shot at a ring.

The fact is, we’ve traded most of our desired players. What’s left is a smattering of whatevers who likely aren’t re-signing here, so may as well get a few dimes and nickels rather than nothing at all.
I dont like the deal. I wanted him resigned. both vanecek and sturm were traded for nothing. a 4th in two years has zero value. Maybe a 3% chance of a real hit.
I get that we get nothing keeping him, but resigning him is a better play. Hes a quality character. good FO guy. has some offensive punch. Good defensively. Perfect 4th liner.

As written before, I think these deals are more for Sturm and Vanecek than for the sharks. In other words, they are for establishing a reputation that Grier is a player friendly GM. That can have more value than a late round pick, to be honest.

Maybe and it's arguably what is best for the team. I don't think there's anything to be gained by having him finish out his contract here either way.
Like I said, I would have just extended him now instead of waiting for the offseason, but maybe he didn’t want to return and maybe he wanted a shot to win.
Possibly. We probably will never know but I think they'll be talking again in July. Getting a lottery ticket for a player of Sturm's caliber is a good deal regardless of the motivations.

This isn't a video game where you wave a wand and a guy wants to re-sign. Signing is a two way street. My guess is that Sturm is going to want some term again on his next deal like he got here. Another 3 years isn't worth re-signing, that is if he even wants to be in SJ for another year or two of losing.
He's going to make more money on his next deal with a good playoff run in FLA than he would simply sticking around in SJ. There was no reason for him to really want to stick in SJ and re-sign as opposed to riding it out to UFA and being sold as a rental with a chance to increase value with a good playoff run.

I hope so, but as nice as it is to have a surplus of lotto tickets, the team also needs actual players that provide on-ice value.

I would have been happy extending Sturm too but Dellandrea is 5 years younger and looks like he can play a similar role.
What we really need is another legit middle six center who's closer to Wennberg in impact.
I agree. We need more legit guys and not bottom liners, but my issue with moving on from Sturm is what he provides in the faceoff circle. We’re a team with a bad D that gets hemmed in our own zone for far too long and having someone who can get us possession over 60% of the time after a whistle is valuable.
I guess Ty is decent enough in that department but I don’t think he provides enough outside of that to be a viable player for us. Neither would have been here during our resurgence anyways.
Asset management aside, I think it's important for the org to show that, if your situation warrants, you can sign here for a year or two and we'll accommodate a trade to a contender
I agree with the on-ice value. I just don't see Sturm as one of those guys.
