Proposal: Fix Detroit’s depth!

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

The wings biggest failings this year can be attributed to coaching (Lalonde) and roster depth. The 3rd and 4th lines, and the 4-6 D-men have been hot garbage.

On the table; 2025 and 2026 2nd round picks and later.
Talbot, Mrazek, Copp, Compher, Holl, Tarasenko, Gustafsson, Chiarot, Rasmussen, Berggren, Wallinder, Buium, Tuomisto

I realize these aren’t worth much, and collectively have been trash this year (especially Compher, Tank, Holl and Gus). A team might find use for one of them on their team, though.

Biggest needs; a legit #3/4 D, a 3rd line winger that can slot up a line and is good for 40ish points, and 2 #5 defensemen that can make a solid 3rd pair.

Who would you move picks and players for to upgrade Detroit’s terrible depth this season?

Trade for Barzal

Honestly, I wouldn’t hate this. Kane will need replacing sometime soon and he’d be a solid 2W option.
DeBrincat - Kasper -Barzal could be fun to watch.

I’m guessing it would take a 1st to get him though. With the value of the wings 2025 1st I’d want something else coming back. Maybe a bottom pair D and some salary in the form of Compher going the other way. Compher seems like a Lou Lam kind of player.

$9M 2nd line winger is gross even with the cap inflation.

Forward depth can be solved in house. Buy out Tank and have Mazur and Shine start with the big club. Mazur can be that aggressive 40pt 3rd line guy, and Shine can be a 10-15 4th line grit guy.

Throw 5-7 at either Gavrikov or Provorov and have ASP start on the 3rd pair. Issues solved.

You can have Michigan-native Torey Krug for future considerations. If he comes back from ankle surgery he’s an NHL-caliber defender, even if it’s bottom-pairing and PP-specialist.

Watching Ghost was frustrating enough. Then we replaced him with Gustafsson, who is Ghost minus the offensive ability.

No need to pay 4x Gustafsson with Krug.

No keep it the same run it back believe.
Been a 94 point team since hiring McLellan (1.14 points per game). A 94 point season would mean 6 straight years of improved point totals/percentage of available points. That would also be the best point total since Jeff Blashhill's first season, after which the bottom fell out.

Core players:

Forwards:
Larkin (28) - DeBrincat (27)
Raymond (22) - Kasper (20)

Defense:
Edvinsson (22) -Seider (23)
ASP (20)

I agree with the OP that some scoring depth would be nice as would a top 4 LHD. With that being said, Detroit has the cap space to take a run at Marner. Not saying it's gonna happen, but if you can sign him and plug him into that second line with Raymond and Kasper scoring suddenly becomes less of a concern. You also have Danielson (20) and MBN (19) who could make the roster within the next 2 seasons.

Detroit has boatloads of cheap bottom six wingers:

Lombardi
Soderblom
Berggren
Ras
Mazur
Hanas

A top 4 LHD would be nice, but again they have prospects who will need to be given a shot or will need to go through waivers, guys like Wallinder, Buium (1 more year in GR is likely), and Albert Johansson. Then there's the fact I would not want to count on Detroit's NA amateur or pro scouts attempting to fill an important role like a top 4 D given their track record to date.

Fix your NA scouting first, see what you've got from your largely productive drafts, then fill openings through trades or free agency. Mitch Marner should be at the top of the list if he makes it to free agency.

You're not offering much. No one listed in your OP is going to get much back to "fix depth" unless it's more of a "1:1 change of scenery swap".

You either need to sign FAs or re-eval who is "available". Those 1sts in 25 and 26 aren't going to help you either. They should 100% be a on table for a now player that can help now, not when Larkin is 35.

That in no way shape or form solves our depth issues. The chances Mazur puts up 40pts as a rookie are slim

Ehh he's not a shoo-in, but it's also not like he's a 20 year old mid-round pick either.

He'll be 23 in three days and was probably NHL ready late last season. He doesn't have the draft pedigree of Kasper, but Marco is 2 years younger pacing 35 points, and that's with a third of the season having Gru kill his production on the 4th line.

Flyers have those assets in spades.

How about a deal around York (top pair D) + a later 1st for DET's 1st + salary if needed?

I'm pretty sure deals for Tippett (top 6 F), Cates (middle 6 C), Zemula (bottom pair D), Risto (Top 4 D), Brink (Middle 6 F, can slide up and down lineup) can be made.

For the pick, I think the Flyers would target Jake O'Brien if he's still around.

Sure, but he’s struggled to stay healthy and just doesn’t really have great offensive skills.

He’ll likely be an invaluable part of the Wings as a grinder who tries harder than anyone else on the ice, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he never hits 40pts, never mind in his rookie season
