Thanks for the feed back and I know people immediately jump to the conclusion I'm referring to Duchene, but I was honestly bouncing the idea of MacKinnon around. Might not necessarily be what other Avs fans want, but I think for the right package (such as one around Hanifan) it should be something considered. What would Canes fans offer for a player like MacK?

MacKinnon is a different animal. Even if he doesn’t have a Seguin-like bounce with a change of scenery, he’d still be a 55-60 point caliber center with 5+ years of cost-controlled term. Carolina has enough prospect depth to add a 1st or so to make that happen.

Probably not realistic, though. Trading both MacKinnon and Duchene would set the Avs back organizationally a couple years and thus, be a hard sell to the fanbase.

So, when we talk about how good our defensemen are, lets compare the D's from last night:

Slavin - Pesce
Hanifin - Faulk
Fleury - van Riemsdyk

with the D's from a game vs Chicago 2013/14:

Sekera - Faulk
Hainsey - Murphy
Harrison - Komisarek

Who would take the latter now? Discuss!

Damn, you could just look at forwards as well:

Aho - Rask - Lindy
TT - Staal - Williams
Skinner - Ryan - McGinn
Nordström - Krüger - Jooris

vs

Ruutu Staal Semin
Gerbe Staal Tlusty
Dwyer Skinner Dvorak
Sutter Nash Westgarth

Holy f*** that team was bad.

I'd expect Francis to look to bigger fish in a swap. Maybe try to pry away a guy like Nylander who will need a new, but controllable, contract that is too rich for Toronto with both Matthews and Marner also needing to be signed.

The Leafs are not trading Nylander at all, let alone for a left handed defenseman they nearly traded down to avoid in his draft year.

The Leafs don't need to move anyone, the idea that they do is simply wishful thinking.

You have 6 posts and 4 of them are basically saying these exact same things. Do you scour HF boards looking for an opportunity to post this?

Nah I mostly use Reddit and just use HFBoards to read the ridiculous hot-takes.

(Which the Leafs trading Nylander whatsoever is but even more so for a defenseman they already passed on decidedly.)

You must love the Leaf's board and Leaf's fans trade proposals then. Over the past 10 years, they have been some of the best "ridiculous hot-takes" on these boards.

It's pretty clear you are searching out a chance to post that same content, otherwise why would you wander into a Carolina Hurricanes GDT?

reddit is nice for casual fan conversation, but anytime it gets more indepth than WOW NICE GOAL SHOT then it just crumbles.. the general hockey knowledge over there is sorely lacking, and the format of the site causes anything that isn't memey or a joke to get buried. i know this plays right into their "hfboards is a bunch of faux-intellectual elitists who think they are better than everyone" but it is kind of true

i am better than everyone

That is an outstanding group of forwards. Deep and dangerous in the top 9 with a 4th line that seems to be one of the best in the league. We haven't had a lineup like that since 2006, AFTER the trades for Weight and Recchi. Duchene (better fit for us than MacKinnon, IMO and a better player overall) would give this team something it hasn't had in a top-line center in a good long while.

I don't see that we'd be losing that much going from Hanifin to Fleury on the second pair in terms of actual play and production right now, especially considering Pesce is on the other side of that pair playing at a very high level right now. And with Carrick, it was just a couple weeks ago we were talking about how he probably deserved to be on the NHL roster and looked decent in his debut this season despite playing on his off-side. And again, you have a steady vet in TVR on the other side of that pair to stabilize things.

Of course if we could get that player for Bean+stuff or even Rask, that would be great, but Hanifin is a player to me that we would not have a particularly hard time replacing with very little dropoff (if any).

My thing is, people keep talking about the long-term, but long-term with this team may not be as long as we think. Contracts are already stacking up, decisions will need to be made. If we get to January and we're one player away from being capable of a deep playoff run, I think you have to make that move because I think we need a sustained postseason to reinvigorate the following.

JMO as always.

Seems like you're asking Fleury to take a massive leap in a very short amount of time making that trade. Just look in the leap in ice time he'd have to take at this point. And as much as I've been one of Duchene's champions on here, I'd do it for MacKinnon way before I would do it for Duchene, but that's considering all angles including age and contract.

Also, I was of the opinion that Carrick would clear waivers and I wouldn't have lost any sleep had he been claimed, so I'm not sure that I see him as a guy that I really want as our third pairing guy at this point. I also haven't seen anything particularly impressive from Carrick in any of his NHL games thus far. I'd rather just keep him in call him up as needed territory. At most, I'd trade Fleury, who I see definitively as a third pairing guy at this moment in time, and could live with Carrick and Dahlbeck there, but of course, who knows what Fleury's trade value is at this point. Certainly not MacKinnon, and probably not Duchene without some healthy adds, which I'd be willing to do if Colorado ever comes around.

Obviously the offense would take a leap forward, but I think the defense would take a big step back this year if we make a move like trading Hanifin. It would take a special situation that I don't consider Duchene to be.
