New York Islanders: First Press Conference with GM Mathieu Darche @ 11:00 AM

From the presser, pretty clear Lou was hired to get the franchise organized and into better hands once Malkin took over from Wang. Malkin let Lou be the steward through building UBS and, well, the village. Collins came in as an owner midstream.

Now, it’s time to move things forward across ‘the brand’ speaking like a business/marketing guy. The village is near complete and the racetrack is in progress.

If you follow along, as I mentioned once Lou was ‘not renewed’ the ownership group already had an eye on someone - but they let the due diligence process play out to confirm. The separator for Darche was him stepping away from the game and working on the business side - he aligns with the ownership group on ‘building’ and making money.

The Hollands and Bergeron are pure traditional hockey management people - they kinda just closed the door on that chapter with Lou. Part of the due diligence exercise, but doubt Isles had any strong interest despite what the clickbaiters pushed out there.

It all fits. Good the owners and the islanders franchise. Be nice to see the franchise elevate its brand and broaden its base. It’s a crowded market, but there’s room. Gotta embrace being a bit savvy and scrappy in the shadow of the Rangers, but that should be the fun part.

The Moncton wildcats coach is interesting. Could maybe do with a bump from Jr.
Had to look him up. He’s the guy who torched CIS before moving on. Worth a shot atleast. Ideally if Roy is moved, I’d like to see them look into David Carle possibly.

Like others, I think the press conference was great and the isles seem to have done a great job with the Darche hire. That said, it’s pretty easy to say what he said - in fact, many posters on this board have basically said the same thing. The real test is whether he can pull what he needs to this offseason. The draft weekend should tell us a lot more about how capable our new GM is, more than acing a press conference.

Trying not to overdue it with my reaction here- but that presser finally felt like the rebirth of the 1972-1993 franchise. Competence, resources, and commitment to Long Island all on full display. I'm 49, and feel bad for some of the "younger" fans that never got a feel for how great, and well-respected the Islanders once were (and I only got the tail end of it). Proof is in the pudding- but we sound like an honest to God professional sports organization again- and not someone's tax write off, or real estate play. Let Darche do his thing...
Amen. I've been on the train since the 74-75 season. Look at what we've had to put up with since Bill Torrey. Don Maloney, Mad Mike, Garth Snow..... I'll give Lou a little credit for getting Trotz here and stabilizing the franchise for the 3 years after Taveras bolted. But Lou then spun his wheels, allowed everything to unravel and go stale. We've had absentee ownership, a felon near owner, been moved to Brooklyn, poor or zero scouting and resources devoted to player development. Today's presser was really uplifting.

Absolutely, well said. Agreed on Lou too. He gave us the first sense of respectability in a long, long time- and I'll always be grateful for that. Just got stale.

With attendance issues at UBS I think introducing a cheaper alternative for people to get their hockey fix could create competition with itself and that might not be a good thing. The other side is that it could help create a greater interest/connection with the community if both teams are doing well or players go from the AHL to the NHL.

How many teams have their AHL team right next door to where they play like that? I'm not an AHL expert but I can't think of many. The Flyers are close, but not that close.
I think bringing our AHL team to the colosseum would be an INCREDIBLE, FANTASTIC move by him.
