This may be a thread that has occurred before but I thought it was interesting enough to bring to light again.
With the signing this year of Joe Thornton, the Maple Leafs have now had 11 1st overall draft picks don the Blue And White since the inception of the Entry Draft in 1963. I don't know if that's some kind of record but it's more than I thought before I counted. I challenge the crowd to name them. One guess each...no cheating. Some are easy...but a couple will make you shake your head because a) he played for us? and b) he was a 1st overall?

And go.......

Clark
Sundin
Nolan
Berard
Lindros
Matthews
Tavares
Thornton

I got 8. Didn't cheat (google).

Monahan
Harris
McCourt

Nordiques and Avalanche would have their fair share too. Off the top of my head.

Mackinnon
Johnson
Lindros
Sundin
Nolan
Turgeon
Clark

I must make an adjustment. I believe I actually skipped over Rob Ramage. So it would be 12 1st overalls, not 11. And kudos for those that got Monahan and Billy Harris.

amazing how toronto currently has 3 1st overall picks playing on their roster at once, all from a different generation- Thornton 90s, Tavares 2000's and Matthews 2010s. i guess you could say we have three generational talents :naughty:

any other team have that? i can only think of edmonton who could of at one point had yak, hall, mcjesus and RNH

Montreal in 82-83 had Houle (1969), Lafleur (1971), Green (1976) & Wickenheiser (1980).

At one point during the 2005-06 Season before Mario Lemieux retired for the second time, he played 26 games with Sidney Crosby.

Lemieux was 1st overall in 1984 and Crosby was 1st overall in 2005.

The Penguins also had Marc-Andre Fleury who they drafted 1st overall in 2003 after trading for the pick with the Panthers.

Close to having Nash and Stamkos

Spezza was close to be 1st overall

Will McDavid come home when his contract is up to make it another one?

What is pretty amazing is we have 7 top 10 picks on the roster this year. Campbell just missed making it 8 he was drafted 11th

7. Rielly (5th overall)
8. Nylander (8th overall)
