Olympics: First 6 in your team?

from NHL.com

"“Europeans, they’ve grown up on the Olympics also, and I think it’s neck-and-neck with the Stanley Cup right now, of wanting to win that event. And I think also of getting that opportunity to get to bring generations that have a Sidney Crosby and a Connor McDavid together to play internationally."

Ok, either I am missing something or when did exactly Europeans were "low" on the Olympics ?

I don't understand.. Olympics were not as big for Europeans with euro players, but it was still decently big. Olympics with NHL'ers have always been huge. At least here in Finland. Average Finn couldn't care less about NHL and only cares about our national team. That's why even WHC gets half of the population watching if we go far (1m minimum per game even if we don't go far, like 15-20% of the population).

I think they are talking about the players and not the fans? I don't think winning Stanley Cup has ever been neck-and-neck with the Olympics for European fans.

Things have shifted. I would say when I was younger/kid Finns did not care about NHL. 1988 Calgary to even 1994 Lillehammer those were considered probably bigger than in 2022 when we won. I mean people didn´t really care that much on those past years if the NHL players were there.

Today I would say lot casual hockey followers and even fans care about NHL and follow it or to better say how Finns are doing in there. But there is small minority who are truely a fan of a team.

I'ma gonna give Germany a try since Canada will habe 1087 entries...

Stützle
Draisaitl
Peterka
Seider
..........

Why is it these names look like a Smith or Jones to me yet Czech and Slovak names look like scrabble pieces were cast to come up with the names? 🤔

Naturally because German, as well as Swedish (speaking of hockey countries), are germanic languages closely related to the English language :)
