We do need to tighten up defensively and I agree that the odd sitting a player down here or there to send a message would help. I'm not sure we have the bench strength to do that

But there's also no way to have decent 5 on 5 numbers if you are not scoring. We've scored 63 at 5 on 5. The mid point in the league is 86. I haven't a clue how to score more. The grade A chances are there. We're not going anywhere without getting that scoring to at least the league mid point.
It's pretty simple.

Top 6 scoring
Tkachuk, Batherson, Stutzle, Debrincat, Giroux, Pinto = 83G, 122A, 205P

Bottom 6 scoring
Brassard, Motte, Joseph, Watson, Kelly, Kastelic, Gambrell = 19G, 24A, 43P

Defensemen
Chabot, Zub, Sanderson = 11G, 30A, 41P
Brannstrom, Holden, Zaitsev, Hamonic = 7G, 19A, 26P (far more collective GP than the first group)

The bottom half of this roster, especially at forward, is hilariously bad. Like, maybe the worst we've ever seen. Our production from the backend, as a whole, is close to negligible too, which makes it really easy to defend against this team when we're in the offensive zone.

Obviously Norris + Formenton would help a lot with the forward scoring and I'm sure it was never the plan to have guys like Gambrell and Brassard full-time in the lineup. So that's obviously hurt the balance of attack.

2nd year in a row when the other team embarrasses the coaching staff. Who remembers the Vegas management telling their players to chip it to Josh Brown's corner because he sucks ass, and the coach kept playing him.

And now they do it to Brannstrom who the majority of people on here say is having a pretty good year! So who's right and who's wrong?

I'd say the GM who traded Mark Stone for Erik Brannstrom and the coach who keeps playing Erik Brannstrom are the ones who are wrong...

But hey, what do I know!

If you have really good special teams (like we do this year), just locking it down at 5-on-5 and playing low event hockey is a reasonable recipe for success.

We can't seem to do that.
Lock up the neutral zone cause turn overs and counter attack ala Jacques Martin and dare I say Guy Boucher at least somewhat.

The Dzone is problematic and the fundamentals are not adhered to which pisses me off often lol.. but a boring neutral zone thats hard to penetrate and forces the other team to give up control of the puck could help.

I am not sure this coaching staff could implement it. Not saying they couldn't just not sure they could.

We're only 4 pts back from Colorado, who are also on the outside looking in when comes to playoffs. No matter how you cut it, you aren't going to win scoring so little 5v5.
Or defending so poorly .. Sens best players are not out scoring their defensive woes. I would not just rely on XGs to right the ship.
If the Sens and the Avs both start scoring .. the one that can play better defense will reap greater benefits.
I have not followed the Avs at all .. but yah I'll take my chances on the Avs getting in over the Sens

An undersized puck moving d man with 3 points in 35 games. Our bar is too low if he's having a "good year". Treading water would be a more applicable descriptor, if anything.
Say that to the people who keep talking about giving him more opportunity and the ones who are always up in arms whenever he gets called out. A lot of people keep saying he's not the problem but I don't think those people want to see how bad and ineffective he's been.

The amount of cheerleading that goes on for Brannstrom and Boucher is astounding. I’m not sure if there are two players that attract more irrationality from Sens fans.

Ya, fair enough, I certainly don't see anything special there.

I don't know the details of the negotiations with Paul in Ottawa but on the surface trading Paul shows staggeringly bad judgement by Dorion. And the same with Brown and (too many) others. This thread is about DJ and I have no idea how much Smith played into the decision.
As with many on this site I'm hoping new ownership addresses this problem.

Brannstrom is interesting in that expectations were all about offensive numbers, but he's gotten precious little.

On the flip side, he's got arguably the best underlying on-ice stats of any D on the team,

He's buried behind Chabot and Sanderson at 5v5 and PP on the left side, but has been pretty good on the PK. I don't think we have a better option than him right now for that bottom pair, and think he gets a disproportionate amount of criticism for a guy that's really not in a prominent role at all, but that might be because of a faction who are fans and are overly positive, idk.

no problem calling out brannstrom but a bottom pairing guys on your team should not be one of the first defensemen called out this season when you have your top 4 guys playing like ass a lot of the recent games. Hamonic? Z? Sanderson had a terrible night a few nights ago....lets not get started on CHabot

Optics wise its just odd and imo sends the wrong message. DJ has clear biases with certain defensemen and we have seen it for years

Some of that Radio conversation is more pertinent to DJ and some topics people have brought up here. I can't imagine DJ liking moving Paul and then Brown out and not getting Forms back
