I can't pinpoint the time where it became basically illegal to have two defenseman on a PP unit but I would be running Karlsson and Hedman the whole time if I were Sweden.

As soon as teams realize having two good offensive defenseman on the PP is better than having a forward back there, AND, have success with it again, you'll see the league switch back to that.

How many times does the forward back on defense have to look silly when the play goes the other way before teams realize this?

Especially with all the good, gifted defensemen dotting the league now.
Crazy.

Kola has been the third best defender for Finland this game, not bad for a dude who wasn't even considered for the team before all the injuries and "injuries".

Edit: maybe even 2nd best actually.
Bodes well for 2026... test out some guys to see if they fit! Heisk better not get a flying headbutt in his kneecap before those!

We ran a PP with Carlson and Chychrun for 1.5 mos Ovi was injured. Worked really well.

Part of it is that the set up as a 1-3-1 has the flankers catching the puck and shooting from the flanks in deeper than defensemen are usually comfortable. If a team can figure out a way to get a 2-1-2, I could see a 2nd defenseman inserted more on the regular. But that's not the norm or the more successful at the NHL level right now so we'll continue to see 1D sets.
