So.. apparently a small war :)sarcasm:) took place yesterday in haparanda (swedish town at the border of finland):
http://www.nsd.se/nyheter/artikel.aspx?ArticleId=6165152
It was at 01 o'clock at night on Monday as a large fraction occurred in the center of Haparanda in connection with the celebration of Finland's WC victory.

After the final whistle went, several thousands of drunken Finns crossed the border into Haparanda.
- It is fortunate Finland winning the WC doesn't happen that frequently, said Chris Holm, internal officers at the police in Haparanda, to Expressen.

Police patrols from Kalix, Luleå and Boden went to the site. The atmosphere was at times very chaotic.
The Swedes and Finns ended up in fights and beat each other. One person was hit by a car.
One girl had her feet run over, probably by accident, and was taken to hospital. Another petty assault has also been reported to the police.
-In both cases there are alleged suspects, two Swedes, said Christer Holm.

Also reported several cases of public burning of the Swedish flag.

This was reportedly at the Shell petrol station in Haparanda.
- To burn the Swedish flag, we think is a bit alarming. It is their way of celebrating, of course, but it gets a little unsettling, said Christer Holm.
Perhaps it should be saddening but I find it a bit funny that this can happen in 2011..

Great celebration in Finland though! :handclap:

Well, I find that just sad. Nurminen as well, be a ****ing professional. I don't care if people drink their brains out in their private lives (happens too much in Finland) but that's how you introduce you to fans who waited so long? That's just pathetic, absolutely disgraceful. And yeah, flowers, hats and aunts. Finnish alcohol culture is repulsive.

Wow, that's really, really repulsive. Of course I understand that it probably just was a small minority behaving like this. But still, I'm disgusted by such neanthertal behaviour.

True  But perhaps not to this extent..

I have a relative there who said she has never seen so many cars in Haparanda before, not even when Ikea opened! ;) Though she didn't see any fighting, only complained about the noise..

I'm now at work in Helsinki and it's total chaos in here. My work shift should have ended 0:00am but I had to stay until 06am. People are drunk as beyond believe. I've never seen people or the city in this state, never. Everyone is singing, shouting, dancing, taking their clothes off; partying in every possible way.

Cops are in lot of trouble with the load of work they are having, one said that he haven't even had the time for a cup of coffee, polices are being called from other precincts. I've been outside the whole time.

Everyone is as drunk as Nurminen was/is. Sixteen years of wating builds up little bit of pressure I think.

This is such a great thread. I am so happy for all of you hockey fans in Finland and you should be very proud of your team, as you obviously are. The celebration pictures are amazing and its great to see a country come together like that. I just wish I could have been there even though I'm not from Finland. But seriously, enjoy it!

Good luck and congrads again.

It might be "fun" to look at these pictures and I do find it delighting that you've started to cheer for us. These drinking habits just cause a lots of problems in here and I know it's the same in Russia, since we're all part of the "vodka zone". One can have fun and go crazy without drinking oneself into a coma. At least one should. In Finland, drinking is an excuse to do stupid things and act like Pejorative Slurs and I really hope it wouldn't be so.

Congrats to Finland. I have to say that though I thought that the Czech's had the best team, it seems that Finland actually played the best. They looked better in that one loss to us & have been fantastic the whole tournament.

You deserve it!

As a Russian, I completely agree with you. :handclap:

 Poor guy.

Hahaha. That made my day.

Any more pictures from tonights "tori jatkot"? I drove around Helsinki at about 1am, but the streets were already disappointingly empty. Only between the railway station and Sports Academy and near Lasipalatsi I saw some gatherings of fans (who did create an admirable amount of noise, though). I assume most people had already moved on to bars and clubs at this point..?

Just got back from town. The party was great, but actually pretty calm. I'm sure it would have been a lot more wild if it was the weekend and the weather was better. Also the fact that there were no toilets nearby probably deterred people from drinking too much. I did the mistake of drinking quite a bit in the middle of the huge crowd, and had to just keep it in until most of the people had dispatched :) .

I understand... but once in a while celebration like this can bring people together better than anything else.
